Calvin Rutstrum
Calvin Rutstrum (October 26, 1895 – February 5, 1982) was an American writer who wrote fifteen books, most relating to wilderness camping experiences and techniques. Most of his books were written at his cabin on Cloud Bay, Ontario. "His wilderness experiences begin just before WWI and span the modern era including the environmental movement of the late 1960s and 1970s. Quetico Provincial Park is a large wilderness park in Northwestern Ontario, Canada, known for its excellent canoeing and fishing. The park shares its southern border with Minnesota's Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, which is part of the larger Superior National Forest. These large wilderness parks are often collectively referred to as the Boundary Waters or the Quetico-Superior Country. Geography The park includes over 2000 unofficial, unimproved wilderness campsites spread throughout more than 600 lakes. Canoeists require permit reservations and in-season may enter the Quetico only via six Ranger Stations, which serve 21 specific entry points. Visitors may drive to three of these ranger stations: Dawson Trail, Atikokan, and Lac La Croix. Puerto De Luna
Puerto de Luna is a census-designated place (CDP) in Guadalupe County, New Mexico, United States. It lies approximately miles () south-southeast of Santa Rosa on New Mexico State Road 91 and on the bank of the Pecos River. The community is located west of, but not within, the Llano Estacado of Eastern New Mexico and West Texas. The population was 141 at the 2010 census. Demographics History The site is reputed to have been visited by Francisco Vásquez de Coronado, who is believed to have camped here in 1541, on his way east in search of Quivira. The first recorded permanent settlement was in 1863 when six Hispanic families built a dike on the Pecos to divert water for irrigation and began land cultivation. Canoe Country Outfitters
Canoe Country Outfitters was formed in 1946 in Ely, Minnesota, to provide canoe trip outfitting services for Quetico Provincial Park and Superior National Forest and what was to become Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW). Bill Rom started the business and then sold it to Bob Olson Sr. (who had already worked there for 25 years) in 1975. At times they have been dubbed to be the largest canoe outfitter in the world. They operate from two locations, one in downtown Ely, Minnesota, the other on Moose lake, about 20 miles east of Ely. Many key CCO personnel became well known in their own right. Bill Rom was an outspoken activist for the preservation of the BWCAW and also an author.
