Calton ( gd, A' Challtainn, lit=the hazel wood, sco, Caltoun), known locally as The Calton, is a district in the Scottish city of Glasgow. It is situated north of the River Clyde, and just to the east of the city centre. Calton's most famous landmark is the Barras street market and the Barrowland Ballroom, one of Glasgow's principal musical venues. No official definition of Calton's boundaries exist, notionally it can be thought of as the roughly trapezoidal area bounded by the River Clyde to the south, Abercrombie Street to the east (where it borders both Camlachie and Bridgeton), and the City Union Line railway to the north and High Street/Saltmarket to the west. History The area was a Burgh of Barony from 1817 to 1846, when it was annexed by the City of Glasgow. Calton (ward)
Calton (Ward 9) is one of the 23 wards of Glasgow City Council. On its creation in 2007 and in 2012 it returned three council members, using the single transferable vote system. For the 2017 Glasgow City Council election, the seats increased to four due to the population having risen by 20% since it was first formed, although the boundaries did not change. Calton, North Yorkshire
Calton is a village and civil parish in the Craven district of North Yorkshire, England, on the River Aire in Airedale. In both the 2001 and 2011 Censuses the population was less than 100, so details were included in the civil parish of Flasby with Winterburn. In 2015, North Yorkshire County Council estimated the population of the village to be 60. The village is mentioned in the Domesday Book as belonging to Roger the Poitevin. The name derives from the Old English ''Calf-tūn''; literally, the town where calves were reared. Ancient deeds and poll-tax returns indicate that the village had a public house and a chapel in 1379. In 1851 there were 75 residents listed in the census, of whom no fewer than 33, in five households, were called Shackleton. Calton is on the Pennine Cycleway (NCN Route 68), and the Pennine Way passes the between the west of the village and the River Aire. Calton, Staffordshire
Calton is a village and a former parochial chapelry and civil parish, now in the parish of Waterhouses, in the Staffordshire Moorlands district of Staffordshire, England. In 1931 the parish had a population of 222. The chapelry contained the four parishes of Croxden, Blore, Mayfield, and Waterfall. In 1866, the four parishes became the civil parish of Calton, and on 1 April 1934 the parish was abolished to form Waterhouses. The village of Calton stands in the old parish of Mayfield, along with the chapel of St Mary.
