Calthorpe F.C.
Calthorpe was an England, English association football, association club based in Birmingham. History The club was informally founded in October 1873, its first formal meeting being held on 23 November that year. The club's name came from its original home ground at Calthorpe Park. The club was founded by legal clerks in Birmingham, led by two Scotsmen who had recently arrived in Birmingham; John Carson and John Campbell Orr, both from Glasgow, and both of whom had experience in football, Carson with Queen's Park F.C., Queen's Park and Campbell Orr (albeit under the rugby union code) at St Andrews University in 1868–70. The club was occasionally referred to as the Birmingham Clerks Association in its first matches. Carson was the club's first chairman and Campbell Orr its first secretary. John Campbell Orr
John Campbell Orr was an association football player and administrator, who was the most important figure of the promotion of the game in Birmingham in the 1870s. Early life Campbell Orr was born in Gorbals, Glasgow, the son of John Cunningham Orr (a bookseller and printer) and Wilhelmina, née Campbell. He was brought up in Cupar in Fifeshire and educated at Smeaton's School in St Andrews, recording 100% in the mathematics examinations in 1868. He matriculated at St Andrews University, which was a stronghold of rugby football, that year, and he represented the university at rugby; his final rugby match recorded, against Edinburgh Academical Football Club, Edinburgh Academical in February 1870, featured six future rugby internationals. Derbyshire County Cricket Club
Derbyshire County Cricket Club is one of eighteen first-class county clubs within the domestic cricket structure of England and Wales. It represents the historic county of Derbyshire. Its limited overs team is called the Derbyshire Falcons in reference to the famous peregrine falcon which nests on the Derby Cathedral (it was previously called the Derbyshire Scorpions until 2005 and the Phantoms until 2010). Founded in 1870, the club held first-class status from its first match in 1871 until 1887. Because of poor performances and lack of fixtures in some seasons, Derbyshire then lost its status for seven seasons until it was invited into the County Championship in 1895. Ludford Docker
Ludford Charles Docker (26 November 1860 – 1 August 1940) was a businessman and an English cricketer. He played first-class cricket for Derbyshire between 1881 and 1886, captaining the side in 1884, and for Warwickshire in 1894 and 1895. Early life Docker was born in Smethwick, Staffordshire, the son of Ralph Docker and his wife Sarah Sankey. His father was a solicitor in practice at Birmingham and Smethwick who took on a large number of public appointments. He was educated at King Edward's School, Birmingham. Cricket career Docker played cricket for Birmingham and Kidderminster in 1879 and also played for Derbyshire Colts in the 1879 season. His first-class debut was for Derbyshire in the 1881 season. He topped their batting averages that season. He played 48 first-class matches for Derbyshire and captained the team in the 1884 season. Crosswell's Brewery
Crosswells Brewery was a brewery in Oldbury, then in Worcestershire, operational from the mid-19th century until 1914. History Walter Showell (born 1833) started his brewery company in the mid-19th century. In 1866 he built a brewery over the Crosswell springs in Oldbury. The brewery was successful, claiming its use of pure water direct from the springs helped its beer, and by the late 1880s the company was making profits of over £25,000 per year. The company was sold in 1914 to Allsopp & Sons of Burton-upon-Trent, who supplied its ales to pubs tied to the Showell company. The brewery was operated by Ind Coope and Wolverhampton & Dudley Brewery until 2006, the buildings then being sold for flats; they were however attacked by arsonists in 2009.
