Calpe
Calpe () or Calp () is a coastal municipality located in the ''comarca'' of Marina Alta, in the province of Alicante, Valencian Community, Spain, by the Mediterranean Sea. It has an area of and a population density of . The city lies at the foot of the Penyal d'Ifac Natural Park. In 2022 the population was 24,096 inhabitants. The economy of Calpe is based mainly on tourism and fishing. Many Iberian, Roman and Arab archeological sites exist in the town because of its strategic coastal location. The Prime Meridian crosses Calpe. History There are some remains that testify the presence of inhabitants in the region of Calpe in prehistoric times; some remains date back to the Bronze Age. The first buildings were introduced by the Iberians, constructed on the higher grounds. Calpe (monolith)
The Rock of Gibraltar (from the Arabic name Jabel-al-Tariq) is a monolithic limestone promontory located in the British territory of Gibraltar, near the southwestern tip of Europe on the Iberian Peninsula, and near the entrance to the Mediterranean. It is high. Most of the Rock's upper area is covered by a nature reserve, which is home to around 300 Barbary macaques. These macaques, as well as a labyrinthine network of tunnels, attract many tourists each year. The Rock of Gibraltar, one of the two traditional Pillars of Hercules, was known to the Romans as ''Mons Calpe'', the other pillar being ''Mons Abila'', either Monte Hacho or Jebel Musa on the African side of the Strait. Royal Calpe Hunt
The Royal Calpe Hunt of the British Crown Colony of Gibraltar originated in 1812 as the Civil Hunt. The fox hunt was initially a civilian endeavour that began when a pair of English foxhounds were imported to Gibraltar. The hunts took place across the border, in the Campo de Gibraltar area of Spain. However, in 1814, the membership of the Hunt underwent a substantial change. Many officers of the Gibraltar garrison joined the Hunt, which shifted from a civilian to a military enterprise. That year, the name was changed to the Civil Calpe Hunt. It retained that title until 1817, after which it was known as the Calpe Hunt. The first Master of the Hunt was Charles Elphinstone Fleeming. Calpe (Bithynia)
Calpe ( grc, Κάλπη, Kalpē), also Kalpas or Calpas, was a port city of ancient Bithynia in Asia Minor, on the shore of the Black Sea. It was located not far from the mouth of the river Calpas (modern Ilaflı Dere). It was mentioned in Xenophon's ''Anabasis''. Xenophon, who passed through the place on his retreat with the Ten Thousand, describes it as about halfway between Byzantium and Heraclea Pontica on a promontory, part which projects into the sea is an abrupt precipice. The neck which connects the promontory with the mainland is only wide. The port is under the rock to the west, and has a beach; and close to the sea there is a source of fresh water. Espasa-Calpe was a Spanish publisher which existed during the 20th century. It was created in 1925, by the union of Editorial Calpe, founded by Nicolás María de Urgoiti in 1918, and Editorial Espasa, founded by José and Pau Espasa i Anguera in 1860. The publisher, named Espasa-Calpe, was owned by Papelera Española. It became one of the most important publishers in Spain. The publisher later founded the Enciclopedia Espasa. Espasa-Calpe opened Casa del Libro in Gran Vía, Madrid, which continued with the direction of Enciclopedia Espasa. In addition, it established a headquarters in Buenos Aires, where it was extended into Chile, Uruguay, Perú, Mexico and Cuba. Antonio Calpe Hernández (4 February 1940 – 7 April 2021) was a Spanish professional Association football, footballer who played as a Defender (association football), defender. Club career Born in Valencia, Calpe started playing professionally with local Levante UD, competing from 1963–64 La Liga, 1963 to 1964–65 La Liga, 1965 in La Liga. In the summer of 1965 he joined Real Madrid CF, Real Madrid, being part of the squads during their Yé-yé (Real Madrid), Yé-yé era and winning five major trophies, including three national championships and the 1965–66 European Cup, 1965–66 edition of the UEFA Champions League, European Cup; he appeared in 12 matches in the latter competition for the team during his stint. The genus ''Calyptra'' is a group of moths in subfamily Calpinae of the Family (biology), family Erebidae. They are a member of the Calpini tribe (biology), tribe, whose precise circumscription is uncertain but which includes a number of other fruit-piercing or eye-frequenting genera currently classified in Calpinae. Etymology The common name of many of these species, vampire moth, refers to the habit that they have of drinking blood from vertebrates. According to a recent study, some of them (''Calyptra thalictri, C. thalictri'') are even capable of Hematophagy, drinking human blood through skin.
