Callington, South Australia
Callington is a small town on the eastern slopes of the Adelaide Hills, in South Australia. Callington is situated on the Bremer River, and is adjacent to the South Eastern Freeway and the Adelaide-Wolseley railway line, however no trains have stopped at the station for many years. Callington is located within the state electoral district of Kavel and the federal division of Mayo. History Callington was surveyed in 1848, at which time John Kiernan noticed copper in the rocks. Callington was named after the copper mining town Callington in Cornwall, UK. The Callington Inn opened in 1851. Little copper was mined at first, before the miners followed the Victorian gold rush. Mining restarted a few years later in the Bremer Mine, digging the lode down until the water table was reached. In 1857 a forty-inch steam engine was installed to pump out of water per day. The County of Sturt is one of the Lands administrative divisions of South Australia, 49 cadastral counties of South Australia. Bremer River (South Australia)
The Bremer River, part of the lower Murray-Darling catchment, is a river that is located in the Adelaide Hills region in the Australian state of South Australia. Course and features The Bremer River rises on the eastern side of the Mount Lofty Ranges at an altitude of south of and flows generally south, joined by the Mount Barker Creek and Dawesley Creek, before emptying into Lake Alexandrina at the lower end of the Murray-Darling basin. The river descends over its course. The largest town in the catchment area is Mount Barker. Other towns include Nairne and Kanmantoo. Towns on the Bremer River itself include Harrogate, Callington and Langhorne Creek, where the floodwaters are used to irrigate the local vineyards. Hills Football League
The Hills Football League (HFL) is an Australian rules football league, situated in the Adelaide Hills region of South Australia, to the south east of the state capital Adelaide. The League has over 3000 players belonging to 20 member Clubs. The League's Clubs are divided into two playing Divisions - Division 1 (Formerly Central Division - mostly the larger towns in the Hills region); - Division 2 (Formerly Country Division - the remaining clubs in the region). Both divisions have their own programs for the season. There is a promotion and relegation system that received criticism in 2014 following the ultimately unsuccessful decision to relegate Echunga in the same season that they won the Central Division premiership. Bridgewater, South Australia
Bridgewater is a town in the Australian state of South Australia located in the Adelaide Hills to the south-east of the Adelaide city centre. It is the former end of the Adelaide-Bridgewater railway line; this route was closed in 1987. The railway was converted to standard gauge in 1995 and continues to be the main line from Adelaide to Melbourne, but no trains stop at the now demolished Bridgewater railway station. A portion of the Heysen walking trail runs through the town, as well as the Pioneer women's walking trail. History The origin of the name "Bridgewater" for the town is unclear. The Alexandra and Eastern Hills Cricket Association (A&EHCA) is a cricket association in the Adelaide Hills and Fleurieu and Kangaroo Island regions of South Australia. Hallett Cove, South Australia
Hallett Cove is a coastal suburb of Adelaide, South Australia located in the City of Marion south of the Adelaide city centre. It has a population of more than 12,000 people. Adjoining suburbs are Marino to the north, Trott Park and Sheidow Park to the east and Lonsdale to the south. The name Kareildung has been mistakenly ascribed to Hallett Cove as an Indigenous name. The Kaurna name of Murrkangga was derived from the meaning of Kareildung and applied specifically to the Amphitheatre in the Hallett Cove Conservation Park.
