Ashland, Oregon
Ashland is a city in Jackson County, Oregon, United States. It lies along Interstate 5 approximately 16 miles (26 km) north of the California border and near the south end of the Rogue Valley. The city's population was 21,360 at the 2020 census. The city is the home of Southern Oregon University (SOU) and the Oregon Shakespeare Festival (OSF). These are important to Ashland's economy, which also depends on restaurants, galleries, and retail stores that cater to tourists. Lithia Park along Ashland Creek, historic buildings, and a paved intercity bike trail provide additional visitor attractions. Ashland, originally called "Ashland Mills", was named after Ashland County, Ohio, the original home of founder Abel Helman, and secondarily for Ashland, Kentucky, where other founders had family connections. Ashland Creek
Ashland Creek is a tributary of Bear Creek in the U.S. state of Oregon. It joins Bear Creek near Ashland, from the larger stream's confluence with the Rogue River. The main stem of Ashland Creek begins at Reeder Reservoir, an artificial impoundment of about that provides municipal water to the city of Ashland. Two tributaries (forks) of the main stem feed the reservoir. Arising on the flanks of Mount Ashland, East Fork Ashland Creek is long, and West Fork Ashland Creek is long. The forks flow generally north through the Rogue River – Siskiyou National Forest to the reservoir. Below the reservoir, the main stem continues north through a canyon, then through a channel confined by urban development and into the broad alluvial valley of Bear Creek. The stream gradient averages about 9 percent on the upper reaches and 3 percent within the city. Mail Tribune
The ''Mail Tribune'' is a seven-day daily newspaper based in Medford, Oregon, United States that serves Jackson County, Oregon, and adjacent areas of Josephine County, Oregon and northern California. Its coverage area centers on Medford and Ashland and includes many small communities in Jackson County. The newspaper also covers Central Point, Talent, Eagle Point, Grants Pass and Phoenix, as well as Jacksonville and other cities in the Rogue Valley. History George Putnam bought the ''Medford Tribune'' and two smaller weekly newspapers on April 2, 1907. In 1910, he purchased the ''Medford Mail'' and combined it with the ''Tribune'' to create the ''MailTribune''. He later sold the paper in order to purchase the Salem ''Capital Journal''. The ''Mail Tribune'' was awarded the 1934 Pulitzer Prize for Meritorious Service, for its coverage of corrupt Jackson County politicians.
