California Sunshine (soccer)
The California Sunshine was an American soccer club based in Fountain Valley, California that was a member of the American Soccer League. The team was owned by Dr. Robert Everakes and his wife Alexandra, who was the general manager. Their home games were held at Orange Coast Community College in Costa Mesa, California and at El Camino Community College in Torrance, California but had exhibition games at the University of California in Riverside, California and Palm Springs Stadium in Palm Springs, California. Their first season was 1977, but the team folded in 1981 after four seasons. The head coach was Derek Lawther. The California Sunshine Soccer Team was founded in 1977 by Warren Hoffnung (a nuclear physicist, aerospace executive and entrepreneur – currently CEO of MyWrapper, a software company that sells software for creating personalized candy wrappers) and Lee Andrews (a financial advisor). Don Tobin
Don Tobin (1 November 1955) is an English retired footballer who played in leagues including the English Football League, the League of Ireland, the American Soccer League, and Major Indoor Soccer League. Since 1995 he has coached at various levels in the Tampa Bay Area, most often with women's teams. Playing career As a youth, Tobin spent a brief period with the Everton Academy before catching on at age 16 with the First Division senior club, Everton in 1971. From there he moved to Rochdale of the Third Division for three years. He spent one season at Witton Albion and one in Ireland at Sligo Rovers before moving to the United States. While at Rovers he was part of the side that reached the 1977–78 FAI Cup finals. For many years he spent summers with outdoor teams and winters playing indoor soccer. Tom D. Reynolds is a retired American soccer goalkeeper who played two seasons in the North American Soccer League, one in the Major Indoor Soccer League and at least four in the American Soccer League. In 1977, Reynolds signed with the Dallas Tornado of the North American Soccer League. He played five games that season, but none in 1978. Moving to the Los Angeles Aztecs for the 1978-1979 NASL Indoor season, he was released without having played any games. He then signed with the California Sunshine of the American Soccer League. He led the league with a 0.79 goals against average. He spent the 1980 season with the Sacramento Gold, ranking only behind Scott Manning in GAA. Reynolds spent 1980 & 1981 with the Major Indoor Soccer League as a Keeper for the San Francisco Fog. Fountain Valley is a suburban city in Orange County, California. The population was 57,047 at the 2020 United States Census, 2020 census. History The area encompassing Fountain Valley was originally inhabited by the Tongva people.
