Calgary Kickers
The Calgary Strikers (formerly the Calgary Kickers) were a Canadian soccer team in Calgary, Alberta that competed in the Canadian Soccer League from 1987 to 1989. They were founded as the Calgary Kickers for the 1987 and 1988 seasons, winning the first league championship in 1987. In 1989, they became the Calgary Strikers, following which the club folded. Their home stadium was Mewata Stadium. History The Kickers' genesis was a team formed in 1953 and represented Alberta inter-provincially several times including winning the 1974 Challenge Trophy and held exhibition matches against professional sides such as Edmonton Drillers. The Kickers joined the Canadian Soccer League as one of the inaugural franchises for the 1987 season. Prior to the 1987 season, the Kickers had sold more than 2,000 season tickets. Mewata Stadium
Mewata Stadium () was a multi-purpose stadium in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. It was the home stadium of the Calgary Stampeders, both before and after the formation of the Canadian Football League in 1958, until they moved to McMahon Stadium for the 1960 season, where the team still plays. The land for Mewata Park was a gift from the Government of Canada. The Mewata Stadium opened in 1906, and by 1919 (if not earlier) had bleachers with a seating capacity of 10,000. The stadium was razed in 1999 and replaced with Shaw Millennium Park, including a greenspace and skateboard park. Other uses Mewata Stadium was briefly the home of two Calgary soccer teams, the Calgary Mustangs of the Canadian Professional Soccer League in 1983 and the Calgary Kickers of the Canadian Soccer League from 1987 through 1989. The 1988 Canadian Soccer League season was the second season of play for the Canadian Soccer League, a Division 1 men's soccer league in the Canadian soccer pyramid. Canadian Soccer League (1987–1992) Teams
The Canadian Soccer League (CSL; french: Ligue canadienne de soccer — LCS) is a semi-professional league for Canadian soccer clubs primarily located in the province of Ontario, and claims the history of the Canadian National Soccer League (CNSL). It is a Non-FIFA league previously sanctioned by the Canadian Soccer Association (CSA), but now affiliated with the Soccer Federation of Canada (SFC). Joe Waters
Joseph Waters (born 20 September 1953) is an Irish former professional association football, footballer who played in England and the United States. He lives in the United States where he coaches Tacoma Stars of PASL and youth soccer teams. Andrew Mark Smith (born 27 November 1968) is a retired Scottish footballer who played as a striker, and most recently was a temporary manager of Gretna with Mick Wadsworth. Career Born in Aberdeen and a product of the Scottish Highland Football League, Smith's first senior club was Huntly. University career Phillips attended the University of Alberta, playing for the Alberta Golden Bears from 1986-1990, where he set the school record for goals with 23, holding the record until 2011 when it was broken by Brett Colvin. David Norman (soccer)
David McDonald Norman Jr. (born 6 May 1962) is a Canadian former soccer player who played as a defensive midfielder. Club career Scotland-born Norman grew up playing soccer in Coquitlam, British Columbia and went on to play 17 years as a professional. Norman began his pro career with the Vancouver Whitecaps of the North American Soccer League from 1981 to 1984, scoring three goals. Neil Megson (soccer)
Neil Megson (born 27 July 1962) is a soccer coach and former player who coaches youth soccer. A midfielder, he played two seasons in the North American Soccer League, nine in Major Indoor Soccer League, one in the Continental Indoor Soccer League and six in the USL First Division and its predecessors. Sven Habermann (born November 3, 1961 in West Berlin, West Germany) is a former Canadian national soccer team goalkeeper, who was a member of the team that competed at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, California.
