Calgary-East
Calgary-East (formally styled Calgary East) is a provincial electoral district in Alberta, Canada. The district is mandated to return a single member to the Legislative Assembly of Alberta. Calgary-East has existed twice, the first incarnation was created from Calgary North East in the redistribution of 1963. The riding was abolished in 1971 when it became Calgary-McCall. The return of Calgary-East happened in the 1993 boundary redistribution when Calgary-Forest Lawn and half of Calgary-Millican were merged. This riding covers the central north east portion of Calgary and contains the neighbourhoods of Vista Heights, Rundle, Marlborough and Mayland Heights. Three MLAs have held this riding to date. Moe Amery
Moe Amery (né Amiri; September 20, 1954) is a former member of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta, who represented the constituency of Calgary-East as a Progressive Conservative. Early life Amery was born Moe Amiri (he changed his name sometime between 1989 and 1993) in Lebanon on September 20, 1954, and came to Canada in 1974. He studied at the University of Alberta from 1975 until 1977, after which time he relocated to Calgary to become a realtor until his election to the Legislative Assembly of Alberta in 1993. Provincial Politics Electoral record Amery's first two bids for elected office were unsuccessful; he sought provincial election in Calgary-Forest Lawn in the 1986 and 1989 elections, but was defeated both times, finishing second to New Democrat Barry Pashak each time. Calgary-Fort
Calgary-Fort was a provincial electoral district in Alberta, Canada, mandated to return a single member to the Legislative Assembly of Alberta using the first past the post method of voting from 1997 to 2019. History The Riding covers some of the cities older blue collar neighbourhoods including Forest Lawn, Dover, Inglewood, Lynwood Ridge, Ogden, Erin Woods and the Foothills Industrial Park. The riding was largely broken with three distinct residential sections surrounded by industrial areas. The riding suffered from a number of environmental problems in recent years caused by heavy industry. Soil contamination from the old oil refinery in Lynwood Ridge has created a ghost town of houses in limbo. Canadian Pacific Railway has also been to blame for heavy soil contamination affecting residents along the tracks in Ogden by a chemical known as Trichloroethylene used as a track degreaser. Calgary-Cross is a current provinces and territories of Canada, provincial electoral district (Canada), electoral district in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Robyn Luff
Robyn Luff (born June 3, 1980) is an Alberta politician who was elected in the 2015 Alberta general election to the Legislative Assembly of Alberta representing the electoral district of Calgary-East as a member of the Alberta NDP caucus. She sat as an independent from November 2018 to March 2019, when the legislature was dissolved for that year's general election. Calgary-Mountain View
Calgary-Mountain View is a provincial electoral district in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, mandated to return a single member to the Legislative Assembly of Alberta using the first past the post method of voting. The district was created in 1971 and is currently represented by Kathleen Ganley of the Alberta New Democratic Party. History The electoral district was created in the 1971 boundary redistribution from parts of Calgary North and Calgary East. Following the 2004 Alberta boundary re-distribution Calgary-Mountain View had a population of 39,586, which was 10.1 per cent above the provincial average of 35,951, which was the highest deviation for an electoral district in Calgary or Edmonton. Calgary-Millican was a provincial electoral district in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, mandated to return a single member to the Legislative Assembly of Alberta using the first past the post method of voting from 1971 to 1993. History The Calgary-Millican electoral district was created in the 1970 electoral boundary re-distribution from part of the Calgary-East and Calgary South electoral districts. The Calgary-Millican electoral district was abolished in the 1993 electoral boundary re-distribution, where the district was split, with the south part of the riding joined Calgary Shaw and the north merged with Calgary-Forest Lawn to re-form Calgary East electoral district. Calgary North East
Calgary-North East (previously styled Calgary North East) is a provincial electoral district in Calgary, Alberta. The riding has existed twice, having been contested in the 1959 and abolished soon after, becoming Calgary East. It was re-established in time for the 2019 general election in the Legislative Assembly of Alberta. Boundary history The historic 1959 redistribution of the provincial ridings of Calgary and Edmonton marked the transition back to First Past the Post. From 1921 to 1959 Calgary and Edmonton, along with a few other ridings in the province elected members with Single Transferable Vote. The redistribution created seven ridings in Calgary, two of those still exist today. Calgary-Forest Lawn was a provincial electoral district in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, mandated to return a single member to the Legislative Assembly of Alberta using the first past the post method of voting from 1979 to 1993. History The Calgary-Forest Lawn electoral district was created in the 1979 electoral re-distribution from the southern end of the Calgary-McCall electoral district. Calgary-Montrose
Calgary Montrose was a provincial electoral district in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, mandated to return a single member to the Legislative Assembly of Alberta using the first past the post method of voting from 1986 to 2012. History This urban district located in central east Calgary was created in the 1986 boundary re-distribution from Calgary-McCall. The district elected Progressive Conservative candidates for its entire history. The district has seen its share of controversial elections in recent years. The last representative was Manmeet Bhullar, who won his first term in office in a controversial race over Independent Ron Leech in the 2008 general election. Calgary-North Hill was a provincial electoral district in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, mandated to return a single member to the Legislative Assembly of Alberta using the first past the post method of voting from 1971 to 2012. History The Calgary-North Hill electoral district was created in the 1971 boundary redistribution out of Calgary Bowness and a small sliver on the south end of Calgary Queens Park and Calgary North. 1967 Alberta General Election
The 1967 Alberta general election was held on May 23, 1967, to elect members of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta to the 16th Alberta Legislature. The election was called after the 15th Alberta Legislature was prorogued on April 11, 1967, and dissolved on April 14, 1967. Ernest C. Manning led the Social Credit Party to its ninth consecutive majority government, winning 55 of the 65 seats in the legislature, despite getting less than 45 per cent of the popular vote. Although it was not apparent at the time, this proved to be an ominous sign for the party. The 1967 election was the first time the Social Credit government had won less than half the popular vote since 1955. The once-moribund Progressive Conservatives, led by young lawyer Peter Lougheed, emerged as the main opposition to Social Credit.
