Caleana Alcockii
''Caleana alcockii'', commonly known as Alcock's duck orchid is a rare species of orchid Endemism, endemic to the Southwest Australia, south-west of Western Australia. It has a single smooth leaf and is distinguished by its humped Labellum (botany), labellum and relatively late flowering period. It only occurs north of Geraldton, Western Australia, Geraldton. Description ''Caleana alcockii'' has a single smooth green or red leaf, long and wide. Usually only one greenish-yellow and red flower, about long and wide is borne on a thin, wiry stalk high. The wikt:dorsal, dorsal sepal, wikt:lateral, lateral sepals and petals are narrow and hang downwards with the dorsal sepal pressed against the column which has broad wings, forming a bucket-like shape. About one-third of the outer part of the labellum is covered with glossy black Gland (botany), glands or Labellum (botany), calli and the labellum has a prominent hump at its centre. Stephen Hopper
Stephen Donald Hopper AC FLS FTSE (born 18 June 1951) is a Western Australian botanist. He graduated in Biology, specialising in conservation biology and vascular plants. Hopper has written eight books, and has over 200 publications to his name. He was Director of Kings Park in Perth for seven years, and CEO of the Botanic Gardens and Parks Authority for five. He is currently Foundation Professor of Plant Conservation Biology at The University of Western Australia. He was Director of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew from 2006 to 2012. This botanist is denoted by the author abbreviation when citing a botanical name. Honours On 1 January 2001, the Australian government awarded Hopper the Centenary Medal for his "service to the community".
