Caldo Verde Records is a San Francisco-based indie rock and folk record label founded by Red House Painters and Sun Kil Moon frontman Mark Kozelek in 2005. The label primarily features releases by Kozelek and Sun Kil Moon, but has also released albums by Jesu, Corrina Repp, Retribution Gospel Choir, and Kath Bloom. Photographer Nyree Watts is the commissioned artist for Caldo Verde, as almost all of the releases on the label feature her photography. Mark Kozelek
Mark Edward Kozelek (born January 24, 1967) is an American singer, songwriter, guitarist, record producer, and occasional actor. He is known as the vocalist and primary recording artist of the indie folk act Sun Kil Moon and founding member of the indie rock band Red House Painters, with whom he recorded six studio albums from 1989 until 2001. Born and raised in Massillon, Ohio, Kozelek developed an interest in music as a child. Upon meeting drummer Anthony Koutsos in Atlanta, Georgia, the pair moved to San Francisco, California and formed Red House Painters alongside guitarist Gorden Mack and bass guitarist Jerry Vessel. Signing with record label 4AD, the band released four studio albums to acclaim. In 1996, Kozelek recorded the band's fifth studio album, '' Songs for a Blue Guitar'', mostly alone. Retribution Gospel Choir (album)
''Retribution Gospel Choir'' is the eponymous debut album from the American musical group band Retribution Gospel Choir, led by Alan Sparhawk of the band Low. The album was released in the US on March 18, 2008, through Mark Kozelek's Caldo Verde Records. Kozelek also produced the album. According to the Caldo Verde website, the album is a major shift from the slow, minimalist music of Low: The first 1,000 copies pressed came with a 4 track bonus disc, titled ''RGC DUB'', featuring untitled dub recordings. Ascension (Jesu Album)
''Ascension'' is the third studio album by the British post-metal band Jesu. The album was released on 10 May 2011 through Caldo Verde Records. ''Ascension'' is the first full-length studio album released by Jesu since 2007's '' Conqueror''. On 8 June 2011, Daymare Recordings released the album in Japan with a bonus disc containing four additional tracks unavailable on the original release. In August 2018, the album was reissued on vinyl via American record label Robotic Empire and featured brand new mixes for each song by Justin Broadrick, as well as new mastering provided by John Golden of Golden Mastering. Admiral Fell Promises
''Admiral Fell Promises'' is the fourth studio album by American indie folk act Sun Kil Moon, released on July 13, 2010 on Caldo Verde Records. Despite being released under the Sun Kil Moon moniker, the album features Mark Kozelek performing solo on acoustic nylon-string guitar. Along with the standard CD release, the album was also released on vinyl in October 2010, which includes liner notes, lyrics, and two bonus tracks recorded live in Saint-Malo, France. Regarding the album, Kozelek noted: "With this record, I had a vision in mind. I wanted to make something that was very personal, that had a theme and a flow, musically." Kozelek has subsequently named ''Admiral Fell Promises'' the album he is most proud of recording, stating, "Bury me with 'Admiral Fell Promises'' That album is me at my best, my most focused. Opiate Sun
''Opiate Sun'' is the fifth EP and tenth overall release by Jesu. It was released in America through Mark Kozelek's Caldo Verde label on 27 October 2009. Kozelek had been impressed by Justin Broadrick's performance when he saw him live in San Francisco in 2007, and approached Broadrick about putting a release out on Caldo Verde. Daymare Recordings released the album in Japan on 6 November 2009. The Daymare version of the album contains an exclusive bonus track. Broadrick had originally mentioned the EP in 2008 but a title and official release date had yet to be announced. It was later announced that ''Opiate Sun'', would be released in July 2009, although that date was later rescheduled. Initially, the EP was intended to be the first studio recording to include the lineup of Justin Broadrick, Dave Cochrane, and Phil Petrocelli. The Finally LP
''The Finally LP'' is a compilation album by Mark Kozelek. The CD was released on December 9, 2008 via Caldo Verde Records. From the press release: The compilation includes a country-tinged version of "Lazy" by Low, "Bedtime Lullaby," which first appeared in an animated featurette on an episode of the children's show ''Yo Gabba Gabba!'' ( season 1/episode 5), and an acoustic version of Stephen Sondheim's " Send in the Clowns" recorded for the Minneapolis Bridge Disaster benefit CD. The album also includes radio show rarities, a previously unreleased version of Hüsker Dü's "Celebrated Summer" and two previously unreleased instrumentals, "The Piano Song" and "Gaping Mouth."
