Calbuco Department was a Department of Chile. History * Before 4 July 1834: The territory was the Delegation of Calbuco, which was part of the Province of Chiloé, which was established on 30 August 1826. * 4 July 1834: Created, as part of Chiloé Province, as part of the 1833 constitution. * 28 February 1855: it became part of the new Carelmapu Department. * 12 February 1937: again created by splitting Llanquihue Department in Llanquihue Province into four departments: the new Llanquihue Department, Puerto Varas Department, Maullín Department, Calbuco Department, with the same law * 1970's: Calbuco Department was abolished, with the implementation of the New Political-Administrative Division. It is currently only used by the INE as a census district for purposes of the census. Chiloé Province
Chiloé Province ( es, Provincia de Chiloé) is one of the four provinces in the southern Chilean region of Los Lagos (X). Carelmapu Department
Carelmapu (lit. from Mapudungun "Green Land") is a port and town ( es, pueblo) at the western end of Chacao Channel, southern Chile. Carelmapu was established by the Spanish in 1602 as San Antonio Ribera de Carelmapu following the Destruction of Seven Cities. In 1643 Carelmapu was sacked and its church vandalized by the Dutch corsair Hendrick Brouwer. On March 6, 1676 Carelmapu received the exhausted survivors of Pascual de Iriarte's expedition to the Strait of Magellan. Fort system During colonial times Carelmapu was the site of a small fort system made up of Fuerte de Carelmapu just west of Carelmapu, the sentinel outpost of Astillero and the battery of Coronel. Maullín is Chilean town and commune in Llanquihue Province which is part of Los Lagos Region. The commune is located in at the outflow of Maullín River. Calbuco
Calbuco is a city and commune in southern Chile administered by the Municipality of Calbuco. Administratively Calbuco belongs to the Llanquihue Province of Los Lagos Region. The origin of the city was the Spanish Fort Calbuco founded in 1603, and became later an important fish market. The archaeological site of Monte Verde lies within the commune. Calbuco Island is part of the commune and contains the city of Calbuco.
