Cal Howe
Calvin Earl Howe (November 27, 1924 – May 5, 2008) was an American professional baseball player who appeared in one game in Major League Baseball as a relief pitcher for the Chicago Cubs during the season. Listed at and , Howe batted and threw left-handed. He was born in Rock Falls, Illinois. In his one relief appearance, on September 26, 1952, against the St. Louis Cardinals at Sportsman's Park, Howe posted a perfect 0.00 ERA without a decision or save, giving up one walk (to Solly Hemus), while striking out two (Dick Sisler and Gerry Staley) in two hitless innings of work. Howe's minor league career lasted for eleven seasons (1942; 1948–1957); he won 99 games (losing 70) and posted a 3.49 ERA in 1,337 innings pitched. In baseball, the pitcher is the player who throws ("pitches") the baseball from the pitcher's mound toward the catcher to begin each play, with the goal of retiring a batter, who attempts to either make contact with the pitched ball or draw a walk. Dick Sisler
Richard Alan Sisler (November 2, 1920 – November 20, 1998) was an American player, coach, and manager in Major League Baseball. The son of Hall of Fame first baseman and two-time .400 hitter George Sisler, Dick Sisler's younger brother Dave was a relief pitcher in the 1950s and 1960s with four MLB teams, and his older brother George Jr. was a longtime executive in Minor League Baseball (MiLB). Early life Sisler was born in St. Louis, Missouri. At John Burroughs School, a progressive private school his father helped found in 1923, he excelled in football, basketball, track, and baseball. Sisler enrolled at Colgate University, where he played baseball for one year before dropping out to sign a minor-league contract with the St. Louis Cardinals. A "cup of coffee" is a North American sports idiom for a short time spent by a minor league player at the major league level. The idea behind the term is that the player was only in the big leagues long enough to have a cup of coffee before being returned to the minors. The term originated in baseball and is extensively used in ice hockey, both of whose professional leagues (MLB and the NHL) utilize extensive farm systems; it is rarely used in basketball or American football since neither the NBA nor NFL have implemented a true farm system. In baseball, innings pitched (IP) are the number of innings a pitcher has completed, measured by the number of batters and baserunners that are put out while the pitcher is on the pitching mound in a game. Three outs made is equal to one inning pitched. One out counts as one-third of an inning, and two outs counts as two-thirds of an inning. Sometimes, the statistic is written 34.1, 72.2, or 91.0, for example, to represent innings, innings, and 91 innings exactly, respectively. Runners left on base by a pitcher are not counted in determining innings pitched.
