Caisse Noire Affair
The Caisse Noire Affair was a scandal which exposed the illegal practices within the national airline carrier Air Mauritius between 1981 and 2001. History The illicit bank account had been set up following Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam's request for funds in 1981 to assist ''Advance'' which was the ailing propaganda newspaper of the Labour Party. In October 2001 Gérard Tyack, who was General Manager and Financial Director of Air Mauritius, revealed details of the Swiss bank account in Geneva for the payment to officials of Air Mauritius, journalists and politicians. The funds had also been used to finance political newspapers, electoral campaigns, purchase of private cars for Sir Harry's wife and their daughters' overseas studies. Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam (in traditional Hindi: Shivsagar Ram Gulam) (18 September 1900 – 15 December 1985; often referred to as ''Chacha Ramgoolam'' or ''SSR'') was a Mauritian physician, politician, and statesman. He served as the island's only chief minister, first prime minister, and fifth governor-general. He is widely recognized as the nation's founding father (French: ''père de la nation''), although the anti-independence political group at the time of British Mauritius used to call him as a pun in French ''la perte de la nation'' (English: the misleader of the nation). Jack Bizlall (23 July 1946 - ) is a trade unionist, teacher and former elected member of parliament (MP) of Mauritius. He is also known as Jacques Brizlall. Early life and career Jack Bizlall grew up in Médine. His first name was given to him in honour of his father's friend who was killed in action as a soldier during World War II. Although he wanted to become a priest he trained to become a primary school teacher. He taught at St. François school (Baie-du-Cap) and Notre Dame de la Paix school. Jaya Krishna Cuttaree, GCSK (June 22, 1941-19 December 2018) was a Mauritian politician. Early life and education The son of a tailor, Jayen Cuttaree grew up in Rose Hill, Mauritius. He was the descendant of Indian immigrants who had landed in Mauritius in the 19th century during which it was a British colony. Cuttaree attended Royal College Curepipe in Mauritius. He was granted a scholarship which enabled him to travel to Scotland to study Forestry. He graduated with a BSc in Forestry from the University of Edinburgh.
