Cairngorm (Alberta)
Cairngorm is a mountain located in Alberta, Canada. Description Cairngorm is set within Jasper National Park, in the Victoria Cross Ranges of the Canadian Rockies. The town of Jasper is situated to the southeast and Pyramid Mountain is to the northeast. The peak is composed of sedimentary rock laid down from the Precambrian to the Jurassic periods which was pushed east and over the top of younger rock during the Laramide orogeny. Precipitation runoff from Cairngorm drains into tributaries of the Miette, Snaring and Athabasca rivers. Topographic relief is modest as the summit rises 1,430 meters (4,690 feet) above Pyramid Lake in six kilometers (3.7 miles). History The mountain was named in 1916 by Morrison P. The Cairngorms
Adam Watson, FRSE, FRSB, FINA, FRMS, FCEH (14 April 1930 – 23 January 2019) was a Scottish biologist, ecologist and mountaineer. He was one of the most recognisable scientific figures in Scotland due to his many appearances on TV and radio. His large academic output and contributions to the understanding of the flora and fauna in Scotland and elsewhere have been internationally recognised. Dr Watson was widely acknowledged as Scotland's pre-eminent authority on the Cairngorms mountain range. Early and personal life Adam Watson was born on 14 April 1930 at Turriff, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. In March 1955 he married Jenny Raitt, with whom he had two children, Jenny and Adam Christopher. The Cairngorm Club is a mountaineering club, based in Aberdeen, Scotland formed in June 1887. History The Cairngorm Club was founded by Alexander Copland, Rev. Robert Lippe, Alexander Inkson M'Connochie, Rev. C. C. Macdonald, W. A. Hawes, and W. Anderson at Clach Dhion - the Shelter Stone, above Loch A'an in the Cairngorms on 24 June 1887. The date of formation is given as 1889 in the SMC District Guide, and corrected in a later edition. The founders had climbed Ben Macdui and let off fireworks to celebrate the Queen's Jubilee. The first formal meeting was held in Aberdeen on 9 January 1889, re-appointing the office-bearers and forming a committee. The first meet was held on 9 July 1889, staying at Nethy Bridge Hotel and ascending Cairn Gorm and Ben Macdui from Glenmore Lodge. Reverend Lippe served as the first Vice President. Cairngorm Brewery is a brewery based in Aviemore in the Highlands of Scotland. It is situated in the ''Dalfaber Industrial Estate'' at the north end of the village, and is within the Cairngorms National Park. History Cairngorm Brewery was formed from the merger of Aviemore Brewery with Tomintoul Brewery. Tomintoul Brewery began brewing in 1993 and was based in an eighteenth century watermill near the village of Tomintoul. It was taken over by Aviemore Brewery sometime in 2000, which then became Cairngorm Brewery in 2001. Cairngorm Brewery has supported the ''Highland Tiger Project'' which is working to save the Scottish Wildcat. For each bottle of Wildcat beer sold, the brewery makes a donation to the project. Smoky quartz is a brownish grey, translucent variety of quartz that ranges in clarity from almost complete transparency to an almost-opaque brownish-gray or black crystals. The smoky color results from free silicon formed from the silicon dioxide by natural irradiation. Varieties Morion is a very dark brown to black opaque variety. Morion is the German, Danish, Spanish and Polish synonym for smoky quartz. The name is from a misreading of ''mormorion'' in Pliny the Elder. Cairngorm (foaled 1902 in California) was an American Thoroughbred racehorse best known for winning the 1905 Preakness Stakes. Background Bred by James Ben Ali Haggin, Cairngorm was out of Haggin's mare Linda Vista, and sired by his British stallion, Star Ruby. Grandsire Hampton was a multiple winner of top races in England and the Leading sire in Great Britain and Ireland in 1887. As an unnamed yearling, at $15,000 he brought the highest price at Haggin's annual Rancho Del Paso California yearling sale, held on June 17, 1903, in the paddock at Gravesend Race Track in Brooklyn, New York. Steel River (Ontario)
The Steel River (historically also spelled as Steele River) is a river in Thunder Bay District in northern Ontario, Canada. It empties into the north shore of Lake Superior east of Terrace Bay. Most of the river is protected in a provincial waterway park. It is a popular location for canoeing and fishing. Description The river starts at the north end of Cairngorm Lake, flowing a short distance north to Steel Lake, which is a long narrow lake with its outlet also at the very northern end. From here the Steel River turns 180 degrees, flowing due south to Lake Superior. It is a free flowing river with steep canyons and rugged bedrock terrain. Strathroy-Caradoc is a municipality located in Southwestern Ontario, Canada. It is west of London. Strathroy-Caradoc is a primarily rural municipality.
