Cain Sloan
Cain-Sloan Co. Inc. was a department store chain based in Nashville, Tennessee, United States. It was founded in 1903, merged with Allied Stores in 1955, and with Dillard's in 1987. It was a target of the 1960 Nashville sit-ins. History The store was co-founded by Paul Lowe Sloan, Pat Cain and John E. Cain in Nashville in 1903. The company merged with Allied Stores Corp. of New York in 1955 and remained under its umbrella before being sold to, and renamed, Dillard's in 1987-1988. The chain had four locations: Downtown Nashville, Hickory Hollow Mall, Rivergate Mall, and The Mall at Green Hills. Civil Rights Movement Cain-Sloan was a target of one of the earliest sit-in protests by young African-Americans in Nashville during the Civil Rights Movement. John Sloan (businessman)
John Sloan (June 28, 1904 – March 15, 1988) was an American businessman. He served as the president of Cain-Sloan, a department store in Nashville, Tennessee, from 1937 to 1970, including during the 1960 Nashville sit-ins. Early life Sloan was born on June 28, 1904. His father, Paul Sloan, was a co-founder of Cain-Sloan, a department store. His paternal great-grandfather, George Sloan, was a friend of President James K. Polk. Sloan graduated from Vanderbilt University in 1925. Career Sloan began his career as a salesman at Cain-Sloan. Ben West
Raphael Benjamin West (March 31, 1911 – November 20, 1974) was an American attorney and politician who served as mayor of Nashville from 1951 to 1963, and as a Tennessee state senator from 1949 to 1951. While a state senator, he supported a change from at-large to single-member district voting to the Nashville City Council. This broadened representation on the council, enabling the African-American minority to elect candidates of their choice; women also gained seats on the council. Early life and education West was born in 1911 in Columbia, the county seat of Maury County, Tennessee; he was the son of Martha Melissa (née Wilson) and her husband James Watt West. Stones River Town Centre (formerly Stones River Mall) is a partially enclosed regional shopping mall in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, United States. Built in 1992, it was expanded and renovated in the late 2000s. The mall comprises more than fifty stores. The mall is owned and managed by Sterling Organization. The anchor stores are Shoe Carnival, Books-A-Million, Electronic Express, AMC Theatres, Strike & Spare, JCPenney, and Dillard's. History The mall was first built in 1989, but it sat vacant and was foreclosed on due to the bankruptcy of its original developer. Despite this, both Walmart and Goody's were opened at that point, followed by Sears and Carmike Cinemas in 1990. Harding Mall was a shopping mall located in suburban Nashville, Tennessee, United States. It was southeast of downtown at the corner of Nolensville Pike US 31A/ US 41A and Harding Place ( SR 255) in the Paragon Mills neighborhood. Built in 1966, it was demolished in 2005 for a Walmart. Harding Mall is notable for being the first enclosed shopping mall in the state of Tennessee. History The mall was announced as early as January 1962, as a 200,000 sq ft, $2.5 million venture. Plans originally called for the center to be built with an innovative design with no doors, featuring only "invisible walls of controlled air to keep weather out", and for the center to be finished by August 1963. Castner Knott was a Nashville, Tennessee-based regional department store chain which operated stores in Alabama, Kentucky, and Tennessee. The chain was in business for a century from 1898 to 1998, in its later years as a division of Mercantile Stores Company. Castner Knott's historic flagship location on Nashville's Church Street closed in 1996, while the remaining stores were among those sold to Little Rock, Arkansas-based Dillard's, when it acquired Mercantile in 1998.
