Caile, Mississippi
Caile is an unincorporated community located in Sunflower County, Mississippi in the Mississippi Delta. Caile is located on U.S. Route 49W approximately north of Isola and approximately south of Inverness. The origin of the community's name is unknown and was also known as 'Lawrence Deadening'. It was founded c. 1888 but never grew to more than a small settlement. The post office (called Ark, To avoid confusion with Coila in Carroll County (http://www.rootsweb.com/~mssunflo/towns1.htm#caile)) was discontinued in 1917 (Brieger,J. F. 1980. Hometown Mississippi p 456). There was a store that operated there until 1997. The store was owned and operated by Sid and Helen Windham continuously from April 1954. The store building itself was constructed in 1930 by Herman C. Burrus, and still exists today (June 2006) as the residence of Sid and Helen Windham. Yellow Dog Railroad
The Yazoo and Mississippi Valley Railroad (Y&MV) was incorporated in 1882 and was part of the Illinois Central Railroad system (IC). Construction began in Jackson, Mississippi, and continued to Yazoo City, Mississippi. The line was later expanded through the Mississippi Delta and on to Memphis, Tennessee. In 1886, the IC purchased the Mississippi and Tennessee Railroad. In 1892, the IC bought the Memphis to New Orleans line, forming the Louisville, New Orleans and Texas Railway. These lines were merged into the Y&MV. Main lines included Memphis to New Orleans via Vicksburg and Baton Rouge, Memphis to Tutwiler, Clarksdale, MS to Yazoo City, Clarksdale to Jackson, MS, and Jackson to Natchez. Between 1945 and 1946, the IC began to absorb its subsidiaries. The Yazoo and Mississippi Valley Railroad ceased to operate as an independent railroad. Inverness, Mississippi
Inverness is a town in Sunflower County, Mississippi, Sunflower County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 1,019 at the 2010 census. As the town had the largest cotton gin in the Delta, it served as a gathering place for farmers from the region when they brought their cotton for processing. The town was heavily damaged by a tornado in 1971. Historic weather event The small town was virtually destroyed on February 21, 1971 when an F5 February 1971 Mississippi Valley tornado outbreak, tornado, one of many storms in the outbreak, struck more than a dozen towns in portions of Louisiana and Mississippi. Isola is a town in Humphreys County, Mississippi, United States, on the banks of Lake Dawson. The population was 713 at the 2010 census, down from 768 at the 2000 census.
