Cafédirect
Cafédirect is a UK-based alternative trading organization. History Cafédirect was founded in 1991 by Oxfam, Traidcraft, Equal Exchange Trading and Twin Trading as a response to the 1989 global collapse in coffee prices. Its aims was to "give coffee bean, cocoa and tea growers a larger slice of the purchase price for the products". Cafédirect secured its first commercial contract for Co-op and Safeway's Scottish stores in 1992. Very early on, the brand was endorsed by Secretary of State for International Development Clare Short. CaféDirect was the first coffee brand to carry the Fairtrade certification mark. The company reinvests about 60pc of its profits into grower training and development programmes. In February 2004, the company released more share floats on the stock market in a move to raise $9.1 million. Lorna Young
Lorna Young (15 June 1952 - 5 July 1996) leading contributor to bringing Fair Trade produce from third world countries to mainstream supermarkets in the UK. Early life Young was born in Dumfries and studied as a youth and community worker at Moray House. In 1975 she left the course to pursue a career in bookselling, working for the next 15 years at the medical publishers Churchill-Livingstone and later at Chambers. She then became the Sales Director for Campaign Coffee. Fair trade Young joined Equal Exchange, initially setup as Campaign Coffee Scotland, in the 1980s. Young introduced a commercial aspect to the charity leading to the sale of fair trade coffee in mainstream UK supermarkets for the first time. Traidcraft
Traidcraft is a UK-based Fairtrade organisation, established in 1979. The organisation has two components: a public limited company called Traidcraft plc, which sells fairly traded products in the United Kingdom; and a development charity called Traidcraft Exchange that works with poor producers in Africa and Asia. Traidcraft was a co-founder of the Fairtrade Foundation. History Traidcraft was set up as a faith organisation in August 1979. It was launched from the top floor of a 1920s warehouse (India House, Carliol Square) in the centre of Newcastle upon Tyne by Richard Adams with six members of staff. Equal Exchange Trading is a UK-based alternative trading organization. Equal Exchange is a workers co-operative distributing food and beverage products in the independent natural food sector. The organization's origins stretch back to 1979 "when three voluntary workers returned to Edinburgh after working on aid projects in various parts of Africa." Over 90% of the company's products are both Organic and Fairtrade. Twin Trading
Twin Trading was an alternative trading company in the United Kingdom. It was founded in 1985 and was based in London. Twin Trading was wholly owned by Twin, a registered charity and membership organisation. It was co-founded by economist Michael Barratt Brown, who was also at one time its chairman. He stood down from the Board in August 2007. Twin was founded as the Third World Information Network with the support of the Greater London Council.
