Sofia Quintino
Sofia Quintino (1879-1964) was one of the first female physicians to graduate in Portugal. An active feminist, who opposed the Portuguese monarchy, she played a particularly important role in developing a secular nursing service, in a country where nursing had previously been the preserve of nuns. Background and career Sofia da Conceição Quintino was born in 1879 in the village of Lamas, in the municipality of Cadaval, in Portugal. She attended the ''Escola Médico-Cirúrgica de Lisboa'' (Medical-Surgical School of Lisbon), the institution that would eventually become the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Lisbon. After graduation, with a thesis entitled ''Some Words Regarding the Sensitization of Bacteria'', she worked as an assistant at the clinical analysis laboratory that served Lisbon's public hospitals. Júlio Fogaça
Júlio de Melo Fogaça (1907, Cadaval – 1980) was a Portuguese politician and member of the Portuguese Communist Party (PCP), who had a major role in the resistance against the dictatorial regime that ruled Portugal from 1926 to 1974. In 1935, Fogaça became a member of the Party's Secretariat, being imprisoned in the same year by the political police, and sent to the Tarrafal concentration camp in the Cape Verde Islands. In 1940, received amnesty and was released. At the time, along with several other important Party cadres, such as Álvaro Cunhal and Militão Ribeiro, he started a major reorganization of the PCP. In 1942, Fogaça was sent to Tarrafal again, being released in 1945. In 1946, he participated in the 4th Congress of the Party, being elected to the Central Committee. However, in the 1950s, ideological divergences with Cunhal led him to start running apart from the Party's leadership. In 1960, was imprisoned again, and would only be released in 1970. Comunidade Intermunicipal do Oeste ( or ; in English: Intermunicipal Community of the West; abbreviated OesteCIM) is an administrative division of Portugal, located on the country's western central coast. The population in 2011 was 362,540, in an area of . Caldas da Rainha serves as the seat of OesteCIM.
