Caboonbah is a rural locality in the Somerset Region, Queensland, Australia. In the , Caboonbah had a population of 14 people. Geography The locality is bounded to the south by Lake Wivenhoe and to the east and north by the Brisbane River. The Esk Kilcoy Road passes through the locality, entering from the south-west ( Coal Creek) and exiting to the north-east (the locality of Lake Wivenhoe). History The locality name derives from the Caboonbah Homestead built by Henry Plantagenet Somerset. The name derives from the Kabi language "cabon gibbah" meaning ''big rock''. Caboonbah Homestead was built in 1889-90 for grazier Henry Plantagenet Somerset and his wife Katherine Rose (née McConnel) and their family. It was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on 12 December 1996. It was destroyed by fire in 2009 and removed from the Queensland Heritage Register in 2014. Brisbane River
The Brisbane River is the longest river in South East Queensland, Australia, and flows through the city of Brisbane, before emptying into Moreton Bay on the Coral Sea. John Oxley, the first European to explore the river, named it after the Governor of New South Wales, Sir Thomas Brisbane in 1823. Cressbrook Homestead
Cressbrook Homestead is a heritage-listed homestead at off Cressbrook-Caboombah Road, Cressbrook, Somerset Region, Queensland, Australia. It was built from 1841 to 1914. It was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on 21 October 1992. History Cressbrook Homestead was constructed as the head station of the Cressbrook Run which was taken up by the McConnel family in 1841. David Cannon McConnel arrived in Sydney from Britain in February 1840 where he purchased sheep and started searching for a suitable pastoral lease. His search took him northward to the Moreton Bay region recently opened for selection after the closure of the penal colony. Mary McConnel (pioneer)
Mary MacLeod McConnel (4 January 1824 – 4 January 1910) was a Scottish settler in the Australian colony of Queensland, who founded Brisbane's first children's hospital in 1878; it became the Royal Children's Hospital, Brisbane in 1883. Early life Mary McLeod/MacLeod was born on 4 January 1824 in Edinburgh, the daughter of excise officer Alexander McLeod/MacLeod and his wife Catherine/Katherine (née Rose), and baptised on 2 February 1824 at St Cuthbert's Church in Edinburgh. On 24 April 1848, she married David Cannon McConnel at St Cuthbert's Church in Edinburgh. Caboonbah Undenominational Church is a union church on the Cressbrook-Caboonbah Road, Mount Beppo, approximately from Toogoolawah in the Somerset Region of South East Queensland, Australia. It was founded by Henry Plantagenet Somerset, and built by Lars Andersen in 1905 to serve a farming community at Mount Beppo. The wooden structure was designed by Mrs Katherine Rose Somerset and takes its name, "Caboonbah", from the Somerset family homestead, Caboonbah Homestead, nearby. The Queensland Heritage Register is a heritage register, a statutory list of places in Queensland, Australia that are protected by Queensland legislation, the Queensland Heritage Act 1992. Kabi Language
Kabi Kabi, also spelt Gabi-Gabi/Gubbi Gubbi, is a language of Queensland in Australia, formerly spoken by the Kabi Kabi people of South-east Queensland. The main dialect, Kabi Kabi, is extinct, but there are still 24 people with knowledge of the Butchulla dialect (also spelt Batjala, Batyala, Badjala, and variants), a language spoken by the Butchulla people of Fraser Island. Henry Plantagenet Somerset
Henry Plantagenet Somerset (19 May 1852 – 11 April 1936) was a pioneer pastoralist and politician in Queensland, Australia. Somerset was a liberal politician who represented the district of Stanley in the Queensland Legislative Assembly from 1904 to 1920, and canvassed successfully for the extension of the Brisbane Valley railway through the Brisbane River Valley to the rich timber reserves in the Blackbutt Range and beyond. Both the Somerset Dam and the local government area of Somerset Region are named in his honour. Early life H. P. Somerset's family claimed descent from John of Gaunt and Katherine Swynford through the Beaufort line.
