Cabarete
Cabarete is a town in the Puerto Plata province of the Dominican Republic, noted for its tourism and beaches. It is located on Camino Cinco approximately from the airport of Puerto Plata (POP). History Cabarete was founded in 1835 by the merchant Zephaniah Kingsley as part of his Mayorasgo de Koka estate, where he moved along with his mixed-race family and 53 slaves he had freed from his Florida plantations and brought here while the island was under Jean Pierre Boyer's administration. He subsequently brought another 100 slaves. Anna Kingsley had a beach cottage by the harbour. Several descendants of the Kingsleys and of the former slaves live in the area today. Cabarete Bay
Cabarete Bay is a bay on the northern coastline of the Dominican Republic. The bay is formed by a barrier coral reef and is a popular destination for kitesurfers. Effects of Development Increased development of the city of Cabarete and deforestation of upland regions has resulted in increased urban and sediment runoffs into the bay, impacting the health of the coral reefs. Overfishing of the coral reefs during the 1980s has also contributed to a decline in ecosystem function. Paradoxically, tourism in the Dominican Republic has helped alleviate one aspect of stress on the reefs. Many fishermen now work in tourist hotels for higher pay, decreasing fishing pressure on the coral reefs. Zephaniah Kingsley
Zephaniah Kingsley Jr. (December 4, 1765 – September 14, 1843) was a Quaker, born in England, who moved as a child with his family to South Carolina, and became a planter, slave trader, and merchant. He built four plantations in the Spanish colony of Florida near what is now Jacksonville, Florida. He served on the Florida Territorial Council after Florida was acquired by the United States in 1821. Kingsley Plantation, which he owned and where he lived for 25 years, has been preserved as part of the Timucuan Ecological and Historic Preserve, run by the United States National Park Service. Finding his large and complicated family progressively more insecure in Florida, he moved them to a vanished plantation, Mayorasgo de Koka, in what was then Haiti but soon became part of the Dominican Republic. Mayorasgo De Koka
Mayorasgo de Koka ("Primarily Coca") was a tract of land in what was then Haiti but since 1844 is in the Dominican Republic. After renting it in 1837, Zephaniah Kingsley purchased it in 1838. As whites were barred from land ownership in Haiti it was titled in the name of Zephaniah's eldest son, the mixed-"race" George Kingsley (whose mother was Kingsley's African enslaved concubine/wife Anna). It is located in the province of Puerto Plata, on the north coast of the Dominican Republic. Beginning in 1828, the legislature of the new U.S. Territory of Florida passed a series of laws that progressively removed the rights that free persons of color had enjoyed in Spanish Florida. After failed attempts at stopping these laws through politics and advocacy, Kingsley moved his mixed-race family—as well as a total of 53 former slaves which he freed from his plantations in Florida—to the estate. Puerto Plata (, ''Silver Port'') is one of the northern provinces of the Dominican Republic.
