CKXA-FM
CKXA-FM (101.1 MHz) is a radio station in Brandon, Manitoba. Owned by Bell Media, it broadcasts a country format. History The station went into operation on December 5, 1928 as CKX, and was owned and operated by the Manitoba Telephone System. It broadcast at 1120 AM until 1941, at which time it switched to 1150 kHz. In 1947 the provincial government announced that it was leaving the radio business. The following year CKX was purchased by a group of Brandon businessmen headed by John B. Craig, managing director of Western Manitoba Broadcasters. The station was affiliated with the CBC's Dominion Network from 1944 until 1962 and then with the main CBC Radio network until 1978. The station moved to FM in 1999. It added an A to its callsign when it moved to FM, as it already had a sister station using the callsign CKX-FM. CKX-FM (96.1 MHz, ''Bounce 96.1'') is a radio station in Brandon, Manitoba. Owned by Bell Media, it broadcasts an adult hits format. History The station started operation on December 16, 1963 as a sister station to CKX-AM. The station, with a power of 29,000 watts, was the first stereo FM station in Manitoba. In 1983, the station adopted the ''KX 96'' and mainstream rock format, making 2008 their 25th year on air. As a mainstream rock station, KX 96 focused most of its airtime on classic rock or familiar music and features a somewhat limited collection of modern rock tracks. In 1991, Western Manitoba Broadcasters, who formerly owned CKX-FM, CKX-AM and CKX-TV, changed its name to Craig Broadcast Systems Inc. Craig's radio operations in Brandon were sold to Standard Radio in 2002, along with two other Craig Media properties. Dominion Network
The Dominion Network was the second English-language radio network of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation from January 1, 1944 to 1962. It consisted of the CBC-owned CJBC radio station in Toronto and a series of 34 privately owned affiliates from coast-to-coast. The Dominion Network was set up as a complementary network to the CBC's main English service which became known as the Trans-Canada Network. While the Trans-Canada Network focus was on public affairs, educational and cultural programs, the Dominion Network's broadcast schedule consisted of lighter programming fare than that of the Trans-Canada Network and carried more American programming. CKMM-FM (103.1 MHz) is a Top 40/CHR radio station owned by Bell Media, branded as ''103.1 Virgin Radio''. The station broadcasts from 1445 Pembina Highway, Winnipeg, Manitoba, with sister stations CFWM-FM and CFRW, while its transmitter is located at Duff Roblin Provincial Park. History On March 13, 1979, Armadale Communications was awarded a license for a new FM station in Winnipeg, to broadcast on 103.1 MHz. On February 14, 1980, the station signed on air as CKWG-FM, with a near freeform format. In 1989, the station flipped to adult contemporary. The following year, the station was sold to Western World Communications. The call signs have changed quite a bit over the years, from CHZZ-FM (''Z103'') to CKLU-FM (''103 U FM'', then briefly ''Mix 103'') and then finally to CKMM-FM.
