CKX-FM (96.1 MHz, ''Bounce 96.1'') is a radio station in Brandon, Manitoba. Owned by Bell Media, it broadcasts an adult hits format. History The station started operation on December 16, 1963 as a sister station to CKX-AM. The station, with a power of 29,000 watts, was the first stereo FM station in Manitoba. In 1983, the station adopted the ''KX 96'' and mainstream rock format, making 2008 their 25th year on air. As a mainstream rock station, KX 96 focused most of its airtime on classic rock or familiar music and features a somewhat limited collection of modern rock tracks. In 1991, Western Manitoba Broadcasters, who formerly owned CKX-FM, CKX-AM and CKX-TV, changed its name to Craig Broadcast Systems Inc. Craig's radio operations in Brandon were sold to Standard Radio in 2002, along with two other Craig Media properties. Bob FM
BOB FM is the on-air brand of a number of FM radio stations in the United States and formerly in Canada. The BOB FM format mostly concentrates on album rock, alternative rock and pop hits from the 1980s and 90s, especially those popular during the early days of MTV when music videos made up most of MTV's schedule. But BOB FM also features a smattering of oldies from the 1970s or earlier and classic hits from the 1990s or later. Once or twice an hour, an unexpected song will get played, sometimes a dance hit or novelty song. BOB FM stations are quite similar to those using the moniker Jack FM. CKXA-FM
CKXA-FM (101.1 MHz) is a radio station in Brandon, Manitoba. Owned by Bell Media, it broadcasts a country format. History The station went into operation on December 5, 1928 as CKX, and was owned and operated by the Manitoba Telephone System. It broadcast at 1120 AM until 1941, at which time it switched to 1150 kHz. In 1947 the provincial government announced that it was leaving the radio business. The following year CKX was purchased by a group of Brandon businessmen headed by John B. Craig, managing director of Western Manitoba Broadcasters. The station was affiliated with the CBC's Dominion Network from 1944 until 1962 and then with the main CBC Radio network until 1978. The station moved to FM in 1999. It added an A to its callsign when it moved to FM, as it already had a sister station using the callsign CKX-FM. CKX-TV, VHF analogue channel 5, was a television station licensed to Brandon, Manitoba, Canada, which served as a private affiliate of CBC Television. Owned by CTVglobemedia, it was the first privately owned television station in Manitoba. It shared its call letters with its former sister station, CKX-FM, owned by Astral Media (formerly Standard Radio). CKX-TV shared studios with CKX-FM and CKXA-FM (then known as "101.1 The Farm") on Victoria Avenue in Brandon; CKX-TV's transmitter was located in Oakland, Manitoba (it is now occupied by CKY-DT rebroadcaster CKYB-TV). Astral Media Inc. was a Canadian media conglomerate. It was Canada's largest radio broadcaster, with 84 radio stations in eight provinces. Astral was also a major player in premium and specialty television in Canada, with 23 specialty channels and two conventional stations. In addition, Astral had a presence in out-of-home advertising. In March 2012, Bell Media announced its intent to acquire Astral for $3.38 billion. Although an attempt to purchase the entirety of the company was blocked under competition law, the CRTC approved a revised offer on June 27, 2013, which saw various Astral specialty channels and radio stations divested to competitors. A bell is a directly struck idiophone percussion instrument.
