CKCU-FM is a Canadian community-based campus radio station, broadcasting at 93.1 FM in Ottawa, and offering live and archived on-demand audio streams from its website. The station broadcasts 24 hours per day, 365 days per year. The station's studios are located on the campus of Carleton University, on the fifth floor of the University Centre building. Carleton University
Carleton University is an English-language public research university in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. Founded in 1942 as Carleton College, the institution originally operated as a private, non-denominational evening college to serve returning World War II veterans. Carleton was chartered as a university by the provincial government in 1952 through ''The Carleton University Act,'' which was then amended in 1957, giving the institution its current name. The university is named for the now-dissolved Carleton County, which included the city of Ottawa at the time the university was founded. Jeffrey Stuart Green (born June 21, 1956) is a Canadian author, playwright, producer, and director, who has worked in a variety of media including radio, television, computer, DVD-based multimedia, and in live nightclub settings. His work has earned him critical acclaim and a number of awards. In addition to the work he has created, he was instrumental in the evolution of broadcast radio in the Ottawa market during the late 1970s and the 1980s — specifically, the Carleton University non-profit radio station CKCU-FM and the commercial album-oriented rock radio station CHEZ-FM. Doors Open Ottawa
Doors Open Ottawa is an annual event held in the City of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, that gives the public access to many of the city's unique and historically significant buildings. Among the buildings included are government offices, museums, radio stations, places of worship, embassies, and historical landmarks. It is the second-oldest Doors Open event in North America; after Doors Open Toronto. Admission is free of charge. Doors Open Ottawa has recorded nearly 850,000 visits since it began in 2002. More than 140 buildings took part in the 2018 event and over 140 buildings were expected to take part in 2019. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic in Ottawa, Doors Open Ottawa 2020 was cancelled, and the 2021 event was offered virtually. Freeform (radio Format)
Free-form, or free-form radio, is a radio station programming format in which the disc jockey is given total control over what music to play, regardless of music genre or commercial interests. Freeform radio stands in contrast to most commercial radio stations, in which DJs have little or no influence over programming structure or playlists. In the United States, freeform DJs are still bound by Federal Communications Commission regulations. Public Affairs Programming
In broadcasting, public affairs radio or television programs focus on matters of politics and public policy. Among commercial broadcasters, such programs are often only to satisfy Federal Communications Commission (FCC) regulatory expectations and are not scheduled in prime time. Public affairs television programs are often broadcast at times when few listeners or viewers are tuned in (or even awake) in the U.S., in time slots known as graveyard slots; such programs can be frequently encountered at times such as 5-6 a.m. on a Sunday. Sunday morning talk shows are a notable exception to this obscure scheduling. Ken Rockburn
Ken Rockburn (born 1947) is a Canadian radio and television journalist and host. He is most noted for his associations with the Canadian Cable Public Affairs Channel ( CPAC), the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation and CHEZ-FM radio. Career history From the late 1970s until the early 1990s Rockburn served as news director at Ottawa radio station CHEZ-FM. As news director, he won three national radio awards from ACTRA. Jeremy Gara (born June 6, 1978) is a Canadian drummer from Ottawa, Ontario. He is most well known as the drummer of the band Arcade Fire.
