CICZ-FM is a Canadian radio station, broadcasting at 104.1 FM in Midland, Ontario. The station, owned by Bell Media, airs an adult hits format branded as ''Bounce 104.1''. History Midland-Penetang Broadcasting Ltd. opened CKMP 1230 AM on July 1, 1959 with studios at 196 Dominion Avenue in Downtown Midland. The "MP" in the call letters was for the towns of Midland and Penetanguishene. CKMP was home to many well-known announcers, including Jim Van Horne, Brian Henderson, Dan McLean and Ken Rowland. The studios moved in 1990 to a new facility on Cranston Crescent off Highway 12 in Midland, in a facility that also housed Telemedia's community newspapers. On June 3, 1992, CKMP was given permission to rebroadcast the programming of co-owned CFOR in Orillia between 1:00 and 6:00 a.m. (with local inserts). CICX-FM
CICX-FM (105.9 MHz) is a radio station in Orillia, Ontario. Owned by Bell Media, it broadcasts a country format branded as '' Pure Country 106''. The studio and office is located in Orillia while its transmitter is located near The Horseshoe Valley. History The station was originally launched in 1943, broadcasting at 1450 AM in Nobel, with the call sign CFPS. Following the end of World War II, the station's owner, Gordon Ellesworth Smith, wanted to affiliate the station with CBC Radio's Dominion Network, but without a feed line to get CBC programming to the station, this was not possible in Nobel, so in the summer of 1945, the station was shut down and moved to Orillia, where it relaunched on September 3 as 1450 CFOR. The station joined the Dominion Network the following year. In 1954, the station moved to 1570 AM. Jim Van Horne
David Melnyk (born December 15, 1950), known professionally as Jim Van Horne, is a Canadian former sports anchor. Broadcasting career Radio Melnyk began his broadcasting career on CKMP in Midland, Ontario, in 1971. From 1972 to 1980, Van Horne was one of the top disc jockeys in Canada at 1050 CHUM in Toronto. It was when he was hired at CHUM he changed his name to Jim Van Horne when Dave Melnyk was deemed to be not rock’n’roll enough. He was named Billboard Magazine's Disc Jockey of the year in 1972, the only Canadian to ever claim the honour. Switch to television From 1980 to 1984, he was the late night sports anchor for CFAC television in Calgary, while hosting the Calgary Flames' NHL broadcasts. Classic hits is a radio format which generally includes songs from the top 40 music charts from the late 1960s to the early 2000s, with music from the 1980s serving as the core of the format. Music that was popularized by MTV in the early 1980s and the nostalgia behind it is a major driver to the format. It is considered the successor to the oldies format, a collection of top 40 songs from the late 1950s through the late 1970s that was once extremely popular in the United States and Canada.
