CFS Saglek
Canadian Forces Station Saglek is a Royal Canadian Air Force radar base in the former Pinetree Line and currently part of the North Warning System, located near Saglek Bay in Newfoundland and Labrador, north-northwest of CFB Goose Bay. History The site was established in 1953 as a General Surveillance Radar station. It was used initially by the United States Air Force, one of the many that would make up the Pinetree Line of Ground-Control Intercept (GCI) radar sites. The Northeast Air Command, the 924th Aircraft Control and Radar Squadron on the station on 1 October 1953. Initial radars installed were AN/FPS-3C long Range Search Radar; AN/FPS-502 small surveillance radar, AN/FPS-87A general Surveillance and an AN/TPS-502 height finder radar. North Warning System
The North Warning System (NWS) is a joint United States and Canadian early-warning radar system for the atmospheric air defense of North America. It provides surveillance of airspace from potential incursions or attacks from across North America's polar region. It replaced the Distant Early Warning Line system in the late 1980s. Overview The NWS consists of both long range AN/FPS-117 and short range AN/FPS-124 surveillance radars, operated and maintained by North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD). Distant Early Warning Line
The Distant Early Warning Line, also known as the DEW Line or Early Warning Line, was a system of radar stations in the northern Arctic region of Canada, with additional stations along the north coast and Aleutian Islands of Alaska (see Project Stretchout and Project Bluegrass), in addition to the Faroe Islands, Greenland, and Iceland. It was set up to detect incoming bombers of the Soviet Union during the Cold War, and provide early warning of any sea-and-land invasion. The DEW Line was the northernmost and most capable of three radar lines in Canada and Alaska. Saglek Airport
Saglek Airport, formerly , is located in the Torngat Mountains in northern Labrador and was originally built by the United States Air Force (USAF) in 1954, as part of the Pinetree Line and formed part of RCAF Station Saglek. In 1986, the Department of National Defence built an automated, long range radar site that forms part of the current North Warning System. In addition to providing access to the automated radar site, this airstrip now serves as an access point for a research station located in the Torngat Mountains. The 4707th Air Defense Wing is a discontinued United States Air Force organization. Its last assignment was with the 26th Air Division of Air Defense Command (ADC) at Otis Air Force Base, Massachusetts where it was discontinued in 1956. The wing was established in 1952 at Otis as the 4707th Defense Wing in a general reorganization of ADC, which replaced wings responsible for a base with wings responsible for a geographical area. AN/FPS-117
The AN/FPS-117 is an L-band active electronically scanned array (AESA) 3-dimensional air search radar first produced by GE Aerospace in 1980 and now part of Lockheed Martin. The system offers instrumented detection at ranges on the order of and has a wide variety of interference and clutter rejection systems. The system was originally developed as part of the "Seek Igloo/Seek Frost" effort to replace the older radar systems of the DEW line with designs that could be operated remotely and require much less maintenance as part of DEW's replacement, the American-Canadian North Warning System (NWS).
