Greatest Hits Radio Cumbria & South West Scotland is an Independent Local Radio station based in Carlisle, England, owned and operated by Bauer as part of the Greatest Hits Radio network. It broadcasts to Cumbria and South West Scotland. As of March 2023, the station has a weekly audience of 71,000 listeners according to RAJAR. On 3 April 2023, the station formerly known as CFM rebranded to Greatest Hits Radio with the previous breakfast show host Robbie Dee now presenting the 1pm - 4pm afternoon show. History The station was launched by its original owners, Border Television at 8am on 14 April 1993 when managing director and breakfast show host John Myers played "The Best" by Tina Turner as its first song. FM Broadcasting
FM broadcasting is a method of radio broadcasting using frequency modulation (FM). Invented in 1933 by American engineer Edwin Armstrong, wide-band FM is used worldwide to provide high fidelity sound over broadcast radio. FM broadcasting is capable of higher fidelity—that is, more accurate reproduction of the original program sound—than other broadcasting technologies, such as AM broadcasting. It is also less susceptible to common forms of interference, reducing static and popping sounds often heard on AM. "The Best" is a song by Welsh singer Bonnie Tyler for her seventh studio album, '' Hide Your Heart'' (1988). In the following year, the song was covered by Tina Turner for her seventh studio album, '' Foreign Affair''. The song was written by Holly Knight and Mike Chapman. Bonnie Tyler version Welsh singer Bonnie Tyler recorded the original version of "The Best" for her seventh studio album '' Hide Your Heart'' in 1988. It was released as the album's lead single through CBS, and produced by Desmond Child. "The Best" peaked at no. 10 in Norway, but did not make significant commercial gains elsewhere. Tyler stated that Tina Turner's subsequent success with the song restored her confidence in choosing recording material. She added that Turner "did it much better than I did". Radio City Tower
Radio City Tower (also known as St. John's Beacon) is a radio and observation tower in Liverpool, England, built in 1969 and opened by Queen Elizabeth II. It was designed by James A. Roberts Associates in Birmingham. It is 138 metres tall, and is the second tallest free-standing building in Liverpool and the 32nd tallest in the United Kingdom. When considering the height of the building, it has a 10m long antenna on the roof, making it the tallest structure in Liverpool (including antennas). As testament to the importance of its design, which was described by Historic England as “embodying the technological bravura and spirit of the space age”, the building was listed at Grade II in November 2020. BBC Radio Cumbria is the BBC's local radio station serving the county of Cumbria. It broadcasts on FM, AM, DAB, digital TV and via BBC Sounds from studios in Carlisle.
