A historical sovereign state is a Sovereign state, state that once existed, but has since been dissolved due to conflict, war, rebellion, annexation, or uprising. This page lists sovereign states, country, countries, nations, or empires that have ceased to exist as political entities, grouped geographically and by constitutional nature. The most recent sovereign states to cease to exist within each continent are: * Africa: The Great Socialist People's Libyan Arab Jamahiriya, which was overthrown in a civil war in 2011 to form the Libya, State of Libya. * Asia: The Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, which was overthrown by the Taliban in 2021 after a War in Afghanistan (2001–2021), 20-year long armed conflict to form the Afghanistan, Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan. * Europe: Serbia and Montenegro was dissolved in 2006, which later formed the modern separate countries of Montenegro and Serbia, as well as the partially recognized state of Kosovo since 2008, which is claimed by Serbia. ...

A sovereign state or sovereign country, is a polity, political entity represented by one central government that has supreme legitimate authority over territory. International law defines sovereign states as having a permanent population, defined territory (see territorial disputes), one government, and the capacity to enter into International relations, relations with other sovereign states. It is also normally understood that a Sovereignty#Sovereignty and independence, sovereign state is independent.
