Yangyang County
Yangyang County (''Yangyang-gun'') is in Gangwon Province, South Korea. The county is located in the northeast of the country in Gangwon-do. Its population is about 31,000 (2004). The Yangyang area is well known for its pine mushrooms (''song-i''), its fish—particularly salmon—and its sunrises. Overview In 2002, Yangyang opened its own airport, serving Gangneung to the south and Sokcho to the north. It was intended for the many tourists attracted by the Seorak-san national park. But the airport was closed in 2009 due to a lack of passengers. The county is proud to unite the five major religions of Korea: Confucianism, Buddhism, Shamanism, Protestantism and Roman Catholicism. There are sites for all these faiths in Yangyang. ''Seonghwangsa'' is a shamanistic altar which was traditionally used for sacrificial rites. Sokcho
Sokcho ( ko, 속초; ()) is a city in Gangwon Province, South Korea. It is located in the far northeast of Gangwon. The city is a major tourist hub, and a popular gateway to nearby Seoraksan national park. Sokcho is home to the few lakes: Yeongrangho and Cheongchoho that are naturally created by the Sea of Japan It was under DPRK control from 1945 to 1950, but on August 18, 1951, the South Korean army captured it. History Sokcho originally was a part of Dongye from roughly 3rd-century BC to around early 5th-century. Sokcho started from just a fishing village with a few people around Cheongchoho. In 1905, it became one of the major ports because of its geological feature. Since Cheongchoho lake is adjacent to the Sea of Japan, big ships were able to come in and out with ease. Later on, Sokcho, linked with Seoul by air and road, the city became a mineral transfer port in 1937. The Korea Meteorological Administration () (KMA) is the national meteorological service of the Republic of Korea. The service started in 1904 joining the WMO in 1956. Numerical Weather Prediction is performed using the Unified Model software suite. History The current Administration was established in 1990. Temporary observatories set up in 1904 in Busan, Incheon, Mokpo and elsewhere were precursors to the current KMA. The Central Meteorological Office (CMO) was established in August 1949.
