Woensdrecht
Woensdrecht () is a municipality (named after the village) in the southern Netherlands. Woensdrecht is the home of the Woensdrecht Air Base, which is located to the north-east of the village of Woensdrecht and to the north-west of Huijbergen. History Second World War On 2 October 1944, at the beginning of the Battle of the Scheldt (2 October-8 November 1944), the Canadian 2nd Division began its advance north from Antwerp. Stiff fighting at Woensdrecht ensued on 6 October, the objective of the first phase. The Germans, reinforced by Battle Group Chill, saw the priority in holding there, controlling direct access to South Beveland and Walcheren Island. There were heavy casualties as the Canadians attacked over open, flooded land. Driving rain, booby traps and land mines made the advance very difficult. Woensdrecht (village)
Woensdrecht is a village in the municipality of Woensdrecht, North Brabant, Netherlands. Woensdrecht is known for Woensdrecht Air Base, a military air base. History The village was first mentioned in 1249 as Wunsdrecht. The etymology is unclear. Woensdrecht developed in the Middle Ages on the border of sand and clay ground. In 1583 and 1584, the village was destroyed during the Eighty Years' War and was resettled after 1590. Woensdrecht was home to 792 people in 1840. During the 20th century, Woensdrecht and Hoogerheide merged into a single urban area. In 1935, a little airfield was built near the village. During World War II, Woensdrecht Air Base became a large military airport, and remained a military airport after the war. In 1944, it was severely damaged by war, and the ruinous church tower has remained. Woensdrecht Air Base ( nl, Vliegbasis Woensdrecht) is a military airport between the villages of Woensdrecht and Huijbergen, about south of the city of Bergen op Zoom in the Netherlands. It is located near the A58 motorway and the border with Belgium. The airport was founded in 1934 as a glider and training airfield for the Royal Netherlands Air Force. The Battle of the Scheldt in World War II was a series of military operations led by the First Canadian Army, with Polish and British units attached, to open up the shipping route to Antwerp so that its port could be used to supply the Allies in north-west Europe. Under acting command of the First Canadian's Lieutenant-General Guy Simonds, the battle took place in northern Belgium and southwestern Netherlands from 2 October to 8 November 1944. The Canadians had been delayed, and pressure on the Scheldt left wanting, by Allied decisions to focus on Arnhem ( Operation Market Garden), Boulogne (Operation Wellhit), Calais (Operation Undergo) and Dunkirk. Hoogerheide is a village in the municipality of Woensdrecht, North Brabant, Netherlands. The name "Hoogerheide" means "High Heath" in English. Huijbergen
Huijbergen is a village in the Dutch province of North Brabant. It is located in the municipality of Woensdrecht, about southeast of Bergen op Zoom, close to the Belgian border. History The village was first mentioned in 1264 as in Huybergen. The etymology is unclear. In 1264, , Lord of Breda, sold the moorland around Huijbergen for cultivation. The village developed in 1278 around the monastery of the Hermits of Saint William. Only the gate wing of the monastery from the early-17th century remains. In 1847, an orphanage by the Brothers of Our Lady was established at the site. The building were severely damaged in 1944, and rebuilt in the 1950s in traditional style. The grist mill Johanna was built in 1862. In 1918, the miller was struck by lightning and died several month later. It was already a ruin in the 1940s. Hollanditis was a term coined in 1981 by the American historian Walter Laqueur. It was used to describe the wave of pacifist neutralism that swept through the Netherlands in the first half of the 1980s and which influenced similar grass roots movements in other European countries. The Calgary Highlanders is a Canadian Army Primary Reserve infantry regiment, headquartered at Mewata Armouries in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Postal codes in the Netherlands, known as ''postcodes'', are alphanumeric, consisting of four digits followed by two uppercase letters.
