West Athens (regional Unit)
West Athens ( el, Δυτικός Τομέας Αθηνών) is one of the regional units of Greece. It is part of the region of Attica. The regional unit covers the west-central part of the agglomeration of Athens. Administration As a part of the 2011 Kallikratis government reform, the regional unit West Athens was created out of part of the former Athens Prefecture. It is subdivided into 7 municipalities. Athens Prefecture
The Athens Prefecture ( el, Νομαρχία Αθηνών, translit=Nomarkhía Athinón) was one of the prefectures of Greece. It was part of the Attica region and the Athens-Piraeus super-prefecture. The capital of the prefecture was the city of Athens. After Lefkada Prefecture it was the second-smallest in Greece, but was the most populous and most densely populated. It covered the central part of the agglomeration of Athens. Its extremities lied in the municipalities or communities of Chaidari in the west, Ekali in the north, Penteli in the east, and Glyfada in the south. Petroupoli ( el, Πετρούπολη, meaning "City/town of Peter") is a town in Attica that falls under the administrative sector of West Athens. Petroupoli was part of the community of Nea Liosia until 1946, when it became a separate community. It was elevated to municipality status in 1972. Geography Petroupoli is situated in the eastern foothills of the Egaleo mountain, 7 km northwest of Athens. The municipality has an area of 6.597 km2. Aigaleo or Egaleo ( el, Αιγάλεω ) is a suburban municipality in the western part of Athens, belonging to the West Athens regional administrative unit. It takes its name from Mount Aigaleo.
