Weightlifting At The 2016 Summer Olympics
Weightlifting competitions at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro took place from 6 to 16 August at the Pavilion 2 of Riocentro. 260 athletes (156 men and 104 women) competed in 15 different events according to their respective weight categories. Bulgaria and Russia were banned from participating in the sport for systematic doping. Events 15 sets of medals were awarded in the following events: Competition schedule There were at most three sessions of competition on each day of the 2016 Olympics Weightlifting program: * Morning session: 10:00–14:00 BRT * Afternoon session: 15:30–17:30 BRT * Evening session: 19:00–21:00 BRT Qualification Similar to 2012 format, a total of 260 athletes qualified through a combination of team and individual spots. Riocentro
Riocentro is an exhibition and convention center located in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Built in 1977, it is the largest exhibition center in Latin America. Notable events 1981 May Day attack On April 30, 1981, during a May Day music concert, Riocentro was the target of a terrorist attack by hardliner members of the Brazilian military dictatorship (1964–1985). Sergeant Guilherme Pereira do Rosário and then-Captain Wilson Dias Machado, nowadays a Colonel, were responsible for detonating two bombs at the venue. Around 9 p.m., however, one of the bombs exploded in the lap of Sergeant Rosário, killing him and seriously wounding Machado. A second bomb exploded a few miles away at a powerhouse responsible for providing electrical energy to Riocentro; it was thrown over the fence and exploded on the ground, and the electric power supply was never interrupted that evening. Shi Zhiyong (weightlifter, Born 1993)
Shi Zhiyong (; born 10 October 1993) is a Chinese weightlifter, two time Olympic Champion, three time World Champion and four time Asian Champion competing in the 69 kg category until 2018 and 73 kg starting in 2018 after the International Weightlifting Federation reorganized the categories. Shi was born Shi Lei (Chinese: 石磊), but his coach Zhan Xugang gave him the new name after former Olympic Champion Shi Zhiyong. He holds the current world records in the -73 kg class for the snatch, clean and jerk and total, and has set 13 world records. Eko Yuli Irawan (born 24 July 1989) is an Indonesian weightlifter, Olympian, and World Champion competing in the 62 kg category until 2018 and 61 kg starting in 2018 after the International Weightlifting Federation reorganized the categories. Irawan started his career at the 2006 World Junior Championships, when he won a silver medal. Since then, he has continued his brilliant career by achieving many achievements. Óscar Figueroa (weightlifter)
Oscar Albeiro Figueroa Mosquera (born 27 April 1983) is a Colombian weightlifter, and Olympic Champion (gold-medalist) competing in the 62 kg category until 2018 and 67 kg starting in 2018 after the International Weightlifting Federation reorganized the categories. He was born in the rural township of Zaragoza, located in Cartago, Valle del Cauca, Colombia. Sinphet "Dui" Kruaithong ( th, สินธุ์เพชร กรวยทอง; born 22 August 1995 in Chumphon Buri District, Surin Province) is a Thai Olympic weightlifter. Long Qingquan
Long Qingquan (, born December 3, 1990 in Longshan, Xiangxi, Hunan) is a Chinese weightlifter. He is a two-time Olympic champion in the 56 kg weight division. Career Long qualified for the 56 kg class at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, where he won a gold medal in the 56 kg weightlifting. He achieved two junior world records on his way to winning the gold in the men's weightlifting 56 kg category.
