Watney Combe & Reid
Watney Combe & Reid was a leading brewery in London. At its peak in the 1930s it was a constituent of the FT 30 index of leading companies on the London Stock Exchange. It produced Watney's Red Barrel. History The Watney family were the main partners in the Stag Brewery, Victoria, for much of the 19th century. In 1837 James Watney became a partner in the brewery, followed by his sons James and Norman in 1856. On his death in 1884, the brewery became a private limited company. In 1889 James Watney & Co., acquired the Mortlake Brewery (latterly referred to as the Stag Brewery of Mortlake), which had been owned by Charles James Philips and James Wigan since the 1840s. In 1898 the company merged with Combe Delafield and Co. and Reid and Co., and was subsequently known as Watney Combe and Reid. The amalgamated company was the largest brewer in London. James Watney
James Watney (18 December 1800–16 March 1884) was an English brewer and landowner who resided at Haling Park, Croydon, and Beddington, Surrey. He was born to Daniel Watney (1771–1831) of Mitcham, Surrey and Mary Galpin (1771–1830), daughter of James Galpin (died 1789) of Mitcham, Surrey. He was the grandson of John Watney (1747–1814) and great-grandson of Daniel Watney (1705–1780) of Wimbledon, Surrey who was an ale conner. Professional life The Watney family were the main partners in the Stag Brewery of Pimlico for much of the 19th century. In 1837, James Watney became a partner in the brewery with John Lettsom Elliot and Charles Lambert, as later did his sons James and Norman in 1856. Herbert Watney
Herbert Watney (1843–1932) of Buckhold, Pangbourne, Berkshire (now St. Andrew's School) was a nineteenth century London physician, landowner and philanthropist, and a strong supporter of Christian missions. Early life Herbert Watney was born on 15 December 1843 at Wandsworth, Surrey the son of James Watney of Haling Park, Croydon, Surrey. He was educated at Rugby and St. John's College, Cambridge. As an undergraduate, he was a rowing blue and rowed three times for Cambridge University, in the losing crews of 1865, 1866 and 1867, and won the Colquhoun Sculls Cup. He took his BA is 1866 and MA in 1869. He went on to St George’s Hospital, London where he graduated in 1870, also studying medicine at University College, at Jena and at Würzburg. He qualified as MRCS in 1876. John Watney
Sir John Watney (27 January 1834 – 25 March 1923), a member of the Watney family, was Honorary Secretary of the City and Guilds, City and Guilds of London Institute for the Advancement of Technical Education from 1878 to 1920 and Chairman of Council of the City and Guilds of London Institute from 1921 to 1923. He was the eldest son of John Watney and Susannah Dormay of Mitcham, Surrey. His uncle was James Watney, brewer and one time Master of the Mercers' Company. He was educated at Harrow School, Harrow and became a solicitor in 1857. In 1864 he married Elizabeth Dendy. He was appointed as Lieutenant for the City of London, and served for over thirty years as Clerk to the Mercers' Company and to the Gresham College, Gresham Committee, a position from which he retired on 1 February 1907. Claude Watney
Claude Watney (4 November 18667 November 1919) was a British brewery director and motor dealer. He was member of the Watney family of brewers, director of the brewing firm Watney Combe & Reid, and a motor dealer and enthusiast. In 1903 he had a showroom in London selling Panhard and Mercedes motor cars. He owned a Pipe vehicle, and his wife Ada was also an enthusiastic motorist. He was a member of the committee of the Automobile Club of Great Britain and Ireland, which became the Royal Automobile Club. Katherine Watney
Katherine Watney (1870 – 10 January 1958) was a British-born missionary nurse in China. Early years Katherine Watney was born on 23 February 1870 in Beddington, Surrey. A member of the Watney family, she was the second daughter of Norman Watney of Westerham, Kent, son of the brewer James Watney. She was commonly called ‘Kate’. Early in life Watney dedicated herself to missionary work, and for this purpose trained as a nurse. Missionary work in China Watney was accepted by the CEZMS ( Church of England Zenana Missionary Society), a mission which started in India but spread to China. She was sent to China. In 1922 at the time of the National Christian conference in Shanghai she was in Fuzhou, Fujian province. She was Principal of the Church of England Zenana Mission School for Blind Girls in Nantai. Constance Watney
Constance Watney, MBE, COC, SRN, MBCN (1878 – 23 November 1947), was a British born missionary nurse in Uganda. Early years Constance Watney was born in 1878 in Beddington, Surrey. A member of the Watney family, she was the fourth daughter of Norman Watney of Westerham, Kent, son of the brewer James Watney. Early in life Constance dedicated herself to missionary work, and for this purpose trained as a nurse at St Bartholomew's Hospital. In 1906 she went as a student of midwifery to Clapham Maternity Hospital, 41-43 Jeffreys Road, Clapham, London, a pioneering hospital training women for work both at home and abroad, and took her CMB Examination. Missionary work in Uganda In 1908 Constance was accepted by the Church Missionary Society (C.M.S.) and sent out to Kampala, Uganda, where she worked in the Mengo Hospital, under Dr Sir Albert Ruskin Cook. Joseph Gurney Barclay (missionary)
Joseph Gurney Barclay (9 February 1879 – 15 April 1976) was a British banker and Evangelical Anglican missionary. Barclay was the fourth son of Robert Barclay of High Leigh and the grandson of Joseph Gurney Barclay, an astronomer. He was born on 9 February 1879 in Hoddesdon, Hertfordshire. His mother was Elizabeth Ellen Buxton, granddaughter of Sir Thomas Fowell Buxton. He was educated at Harrow School and Trinity College, Cambridge. He entered the family bank (Barclay's Bank), but left in 1908 to become a missionary to Japan. He returned to Britain in 1926 to work for the Church Missionary Society. Family He married twice. His first wife was Gillian Birbeck whom he married on 25 May 1905 in Freebridge Lynn, Norfolk. Oliver Barclay
Oliver Rainsford Barclay (22 February 1919 – 12 September 2013) was a British academic and evangelical Christian. Originally a zoologist, he later turned his attentions to widening the influence of conservative evangelical Christianity within universities and theological colleges. He was General Secretary of the Universities and Colleges Christian Fellowship from 1964 to 1980, and also Chair of the International Fellowship of Evangelical Students from 1971 to 1979.
