Upali Newspapers
Upali Newspapers (Private) Limited (UNL) is a Sri Lankan media company which publishes a number of national newspapers and magazines. UNL was founded by Upali Wijewardene, nephew of media mogul D. R. Wijewardena. Upali Wijewardene started publishing two Sunday newspapers, ''Sunday Island (Sri Lanka), Sunday Island'' and ''Divaina Irida Sangrahaya'', in 1981. The two newspapers' daily counterparts - ''Divaina'' and ''The Island (Sri Lanka), The Island'' - started in 1982. Upali Wijewardene died in a mysterious air accident on 13 February 1983 and control of his newspapers passed to his widow Lakmini, and her father Sivali Ratwatte, brother of Sri Lanka Freedom Party, SLFP leader Sirimavo Bandaranaike. Upali Wijewardene
Philip Upali Wijewardene (17 February 1938 – 13 February 1983: si, උපාලි විජේවර්ධන) was a Sri Lankan business magnate. Considered one of the best-known entrepreneurs in Sri Lanka, he had accumulated a net worth of US$50 Million by 1983. He was the founder and chairman of Upali Group, the first multi-national business in Sri Lanka. Which had businesses in the USA, UK, Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore and Hongkong. The Upali Group which diversified from confectionery to electronics and automobile manufacturing, publishing, print media, leisure and aviation developed many of its own brands such as Kandos, Delta, Unic, Upali Air, Upali Mazda and Upali Newspapers which Insight Magazine UK said was achieved "largely through bravado and wit". Indrajit Banerjee
Indrajit Banerjee (10 November 1964 – 25 January 2019) was an author on media and communication and the director of the Knowledge Societies Division at UNESCO. He obtained a PhD with distinction from Sorbonne University Paris in communication and didactics in 1994. He served as the secretary-general of the Asian Media Information and Communication Centre (AMIC) in Singapore, from 2004 to 2009. Education and career Indrajit Banerjee was born and brought up in Pondicherry, India. His early schooling was completed at the Sri Aurobindo International Centre of Education, where he left with a BA in Arts and Sciences in 1985. Sri Lanka Freedom Party
The Sri Lanka Freedom Party ( si, ශ්රී ලංකා නිදහස් පක්ෂය, translit=Śrī Laṁkā Nidahas Pakṣaya; ta, இலங்கை சுதந்திரக் கட்சி, translit=Ilaṅkai Cutantirak Kaṭci) is one of the major and most well known political parties in Sri Lanka.
