The University of the Balearic Islands ( ca, Universitat de les Illes Balears, UIB; es, Universidad de las Islas Baleares ) is a Balearic Spanish university, founded in 1978 and located in Palma on the island of Majorca. The university is funded by the autonomous Government of the Balearic Islands. History The origins of the University date back to 1483, when King Ferdinand II of Aragon authorized the foundation of the in Palma, Majorca. This college was named after the philosopher and writer Ramon Llull (1232–1315). It operated until 1835 when it was closed following intense debate. After 1835, students from the Balearic Islands attended university in Cervera, and subsequently in Barcelona. There was no higher education institution in the Balearic Islands until 1949, when the Estudi General Lul·lià was reinstituted under the auspices of the University of Barcelona. Xarxa Vives D'Universitats
The Xarxa Vives d'Universitats (, acronym: ''XVU''; English: "Vives Network"), formerly known as Institut Joan Lluís Vives (English: "Joan Lluís Vives Institute"), is the network of Catalan language universities. XVU was founded in 1994 and it is headquartered in the Valencian Community, in the city of Castelló de la Plana. On May 21, 2008, it was integrated into the Ramon Llull Institute. Gaspar Melchor de Jovellanos (born Gaspar Melchor de Jove y Llanos, 5 January 1744 – 27 November 1811) was a Spanish neoclassical statesman, author, philosopher and a major figure of the Age of Enlightenment in Spain. Anselm Turmeda
Anselm Turmeda (), later known as Abd-Allah at-Tarjuman ( ar, عبد الله الترجمان; 1355–1423), was a Christian priest from Mallorca who converted to Islam and settled in Tunis. He is one of the earliest writers to have written in both Arabic and a Latin language (Catalan). He became a vizier in Hafsid Tunis where he died in 1423 during the reign of Abu Faris Abd al-Aziz II. Life Turmeda wrote that he studied and lived in Lleida. When approximately 35, he traveled to Sicily and stayed there for five months, after which he sailed to Tunis during the reign of Abu al-Abbas Ahmad II (r. 1370—1394), where he stayed with some Christian clergymen and traders for four months, during which time he asked to be connected to a Muslim who knows the "language of the Chrisitians", and was introduced to the court physician Yusuf, and announced to him that the reason he came to this land was because he intended to convert to Islam. Valldemossa
Valldemossa is a village and municipality on the island of Majorca, part of the Spanish autonomous community of the Balearic Islands.
