Turkmenistan made its Paralympic Games debut at the 2000 Summer Paralympics in Sydney, with Atajan Begniyazov as its sole representative (in the men's up to 48 kg in powerlifting). It has competed in every edition of the Summer Paralympics since then, but never in the Winter Paralympics. Turkmenistan has competed in seven Games of the Olympiad, first appearing in 1996. They have never competed in the Olympic Winter Games and are the only post-Soviet state not to have competed in them. Turkmenistan is also the northernmost country in the world to have never competed in the Winter Olympics. Turkmen athletes previously competed with the Soviet Union team and, in 1992, as part of the Unified Team. On July 27, 2021, Turkmenistan won its first ever medal as an independent nation at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, with Polina Guryeva winning the silver medal in the women's 59 kg event in Weightlifting. Other Turkmens who won Olympic medals include late seven-time world champion Marat Nyýazow (representing USSR during the Olympics in Rome in 1960) and Daniyar İsmayilov (currently representing Turkey). Basketball at the 2018 Summer Youth Olympics was held from 7 to 17 October. The events took place at the Parque Mujeres Argentinas in Buenos Aires, Argentina. As in previous Youth Olympic games, the 3x3 format is used along with the skill challenge. Qualification Each National Olympic Committee (NOC) can enter a maximum of 2 teams, 1 team of 4 athletes per each gender. As hosts, Argentina was given 2 teams, 1 per each gender. The winner of the Men’s and Women’s 2017 U18 3x3 World Cup qualified to the Youth Olympics. Afterwards, the top 8 unqualified teams from each gender in the FIBA U18 3x3 National Federation Rankings (updated on 1 April 2018) qualified to the Youth Olympics. The remaining 10 teams qualified through the national rankings with the following restrictions; no more than 10 nations from the same continent can participate in one tournament and a minimum of 30 NOCs must participate across all events. Ice hockey at the 2020 Winter Youth Olympics took place at the Vaudoise Aréna in Lausanne, Switzerland from 10 to 22 January 2020. A total of four events were contested: a men's and women's tournament (six teams per gender), alongside a mixed 3x3 tournament for each gender. The 3x3 competition replaced the skills challenge that was held in the first two editions. A country could enter a maximum of 26 athletes (17 for the team tournament, plus 4 in the boys' 3x3 tournament and 5 in the girl's 3x3 tournament).
