Tropical Cyclones In Somalia
The Horn of Africa has experienced the effects of 14 North Indian Ocean tropical cyclones since 1984, resulting in at least 108 fatalities. All but two of the storms struck Somalia from the east. The other two – a storm in May 1984 and Cyclone Sagar in May 2018 – traversed the Gulf of Aden and struck northern Somalia. Sagar killed 78 people in Somalia, Somaliland, Djibouti, and Ethiopia. In November 2013, a deep depression struck Somalia and killed 162 people while also causing extensive livestock damage. A storm in November 1994 killed 30 people in Somalia. The most recent storm to strike the region was Very Severe Cyclonic Storm Gati in November 2020. Lughaya ( ar, لوغهيا) is a small coastal town in the northwestern Awdal region of Somaliland. Demographics The broader Lughaya District has a total population of 101,104 residents. The town is mainly inhabited by the Mahad 'Ase subclan of the Gadabuursi Dir clan who make up the predominant clan in the district. Cape Guardafui ( so, Gees Gardafuul, or Raas Caseyr, or Ras Asir, it, Capo Guardafui) is a headland in the autonomous Puntland region in Somalia. Coextensive with Puntland's Gardafuul administrative province, it forms the geographical apex of the Horn of Africa. Its shore at 51°27'52"E is the second easternmost point on mainland Africa after Ras Hafun. The offshore oceanic strait Guardafui Channel (or ''Marinka Gardafuul'') is named after it. Extremely Severe Cyclonic Storm Megh is regarded as the worst tropical cyclone to ever strike the Yemeni island of Socotra, causing additional destruction there after Cyclone Chapala hit the same island. Megh formed on November 5, 2015, in the eastern Arabian Sea, and followed a path similar to Chapala. After moving northward, the cyclone turned to the west, and fueled by warm water temperatures, it quickly intensified. 2012 North Indian Ocean Cyclone Season
The 2012 North Indian Ocean cyclone season was a very inactive season. The season had a very late start, with the first system forming in October. During the season, only five systems formed, of which only two became cyclonic storms.
