Traralgon ( , ) is a city located in the east of the Latrobe Valley in the Gippsland region of Victoria (Australia), Victoria, Australia and the most populous city in the City of Latrobe and the region. The urban population of Traralgon at the was 26,907. It is the largest and fastest growing city in the greater Latrobe Valley area, which has a population of 77,168 at the 2021 Census and is administered by the City of Latrobe. Naming The origin of the name Traralgon is unconfirmed. The name was used for the pastoral lease of the Hobson brothers in 1844, centred on Traralgon Creek, and was alternatively rendered 'Tralgon' by Dr Edumund Hobson. The town was also spelt "Taralgon" in the earliest records of the Gippsland Times available in 1861. The Gippsland Farmers' Journal wrote in 1889 that the town name was originally spelt 'Tarralgon' and that it was the Indigenous name for 'the river of little fish'. Traralgon Post Office And Court House
Traralgon Post Office and Court House is a heritage-listed post office and former court house complex at 161–169 Franklin Street, Traralgon, Victoria, Traralgon, Victoria (Australia), Victoria, Australia. It was designed by John Thomas Kelleher and J. R. Brown of the colonial Public Works Department (Victoria), Department of Public Works and built in 1886. Latrobe Valley
The Latrobe Valley is an inland geographical district and urban area of the Gippsland region in the state of Victoria, Australia. The traditional owners are the Brayakaulung of the Gunai nation. The district lies east of Melbourne and nestled between the Strzelecki Ranges to the south and the Baw Baw Ranges, part of the Great Dividing Range, to the north. Hazelwood North is a locality in Victoria, Australia. It has a population of 1220 (as of the 2006 census). Max Cranwell, who died in a 2009 plane crash in Papua New Guinea, resided in Hazelwood North until his death. Hazelwood North is so named due to its geographical orientation from the town "Hazelwood" - now known as Churchill, Victoria. Tyers, Victoria
Tyers is a town in Victoria, Australia. It is east of Melbourne, north-west of Traralgon and located in the City of Latrobe. It was known until 1852 as "Boola Boola", after which it was named after the surveyor and explorer Charles Tyers. At the , Tyers had a population of 824. Tyers Post Office opened on 11 September 1882 . The town in conjunction with neighbouring Traralgon has an Australian Rules football team Traralgon-Tyers United competing in the North Gippsland Football League. Glengarry, Victoria
Glengarry is a town in the Gippsland region of Victoria, Australia. The town is located in the City of Latrobe local government area, 9 km north of Traralgon and south east of the state capital, Melbourne. At the 2016 census, Glengarry had a population of 1084. History A small community called La Trobe was established on relatively flat land near the La Trobe River. Selectors began to take up land in the early 1870s by which time the area was known as Toongabbie South. A railway line from Traralgon to Heyfield passed nearby in 1883 and a railway station was built to service the community. The Post Office opened on 1 January 1884 and La Trobe Railway Station was renamed Glengarry in December of that year. There were three hotels by the 1880s and a Mechanics Institute (1886). Sale is a city situated in the Gippsland region of Victoria, Australia and the council capital of the Shire of Wellington. It had an estimated population of 15,305 in 2022 according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics. Yallourn North, Victoria
Yallourn North is a town in the City of Latrobe, Victoria, Australia. It is approximately eight kilometres north-east of Moe, and 146 kilometres south-east of Melbourne. Prior to 1947 Yallourn North was known as "Brown Coal Mine". The Post Office opened on 3 September 1917 as Brown Coal Mine and was renamed Yallourn North in 1947. This tiny hilltop town contains many churches, including the only Serbian Orthodox Church and Mosque in the region.
