Transfeminists
Transfeminism, or trans feminism, is a branch of feminism focused on transgender women and informed by transgender studies. Transfeminism focuses on the effects of transmisogyny and patriarchy on trans women. It is related to the broader field of queer theory. The term was popularized by Emi Koyama (involved in the ISNA) in ''The Transfeminist Manifesto.'' Transfeminism describes the concepts of gender nonconformity, notions of masculinity and femininity and the maintaining of gender binary on trans men and women. Transfeminists view gender conformity as a control mechanism of patriarchy, which is maintained via violence against transgender and gender-nonconforming individuals as a basis of patriarchy and transmisogyny. Sandy Stone (artist)
Allucquére Rosanne "Sandy" Stone (born c. 1936Date of birth is disputed. ''Encyclopedia of New Media'' gives 1957. In 1995, Stone told ''Artforum'' that as of 1988, "I actually have three ages: 12, 30, and 50.") is an American academic theorist, media theorist, author, and performance artist. She is an Associate Professor Emerita at the University of Texas at Austin where she was the Founding Director of the Advanced Communication Technologies Laboratory (ACTLab) and the New Media Initiative in the department of Radio-TV-Film. Stone has worked in and written about film, music, experimental neurology, writing, engineering, and computer programming. Stone is transgender and is considered a founder of the academic discipline of transgender studies. Stone was inducted into the National Women's Hall of Fame on March 5, 2024 in a ceremony in New York City. Emi Koyama
Emi Koyama (born 1975) is a Japanese-American activist, artist, and independent scholar. Koyama's work discusses issues of feminism, intersex human rights, domestic violence, and sex work among many others. Koyama is best known for her 2000 essay "The Transfeminist Manifesto", which has been republished in many anthologies and journals for transgender studies. She is a founder of the advocacy group Intersex Initiative. Activism In 2001, Koyama served as a student intern and program assistant for the Intersex Society of North America, before leaving to found her own advocacy group, Intersex Initiative Portland (ipdx). The organization features classes, workshops, and speakers to discuss social, cultural, and medical issues faced by intersex people. Direct action is a term for economic and political behavior in which participants use agency—for example economic or physical power—to achieve their goals. The aim of direct action is to either obstruct a certain practice (such as a government's laws or actions) or to solve perceived problems (such as social inequality). Direct action may include activities, often nonviolent but possibly violent, targeting people, groups, institutions, actions, or property that its participants deem objectionable. Kate Bornstein
Katherine Vandam Bornstein (born March 15, 1948) is an American author, playwright, performance artist, actor, and gender theorist. In 1986, Bornstein started identifying as gender non-conforming and has stated "I don't call myself a woman, I know I'm not a man" after having been assigned male at birth and receiving sex reassignment surgery. Bornstein now identifies as non-binary and uses the pronouns they/them and she/her. Bornstein has also written about having anorexia, being a survivor of PTSD, and being diagnosed with borderline personality disorder. Fourth Wave Feminism
Fourth-wave feminism is a feminist movement that began around 2012 and is characterized by a focus on the empowerment of women, the use of internet tools, and intersectionality.
