Torquay United F.C., Torquay United Football Club is an English professional association football club based in Torquay, Devon. This is a chronological list of all Torquay United seasons from 1899 up until the end of the 2022–23 National League, 2022–23 season. History Torquay United Football Club was originally formed in 1899. After first joining the Devon and Exeter Football League, East Devon League in 1900, the club then went on to join the South Devon Football League, Torquay & District League, becoming champions of that league in 1909. Encouraged by Plymouth Argyle F.C., Plymouth Argyle and Exeter City F.C., Exeter City turning professional, the people of Torquay were eager for United to join forces with the town's two other prominent football teams, Babbacombe F.C., Babbacombe and Ellacombe F.C., Ellacombe, with a view to creating a third professional club within Devon. Torquay ( ) is a seaside town in Devon, England, part of the unitary authority, unitary authority area of Torbay. It lies south of the county town of Exeter and east-north-east of Plymouth, on the north of Tor Bay, adjoining the neighbouring town of Paignton on the west of the bay and across from the fishing port of Brixham. The town's economy, like Brixham's, was initially based upon fishing and agriculture, but in the early 19th century it began to develop into a fashionable seaside resort. Later, as the town's fame spread, it was popular with Victorian era, Victorian society. Renowned for its mild climate, the town earned the nickname the English Riviera. The writer Agatha Christie was born in the town and lived at Ashfield, Torquay, Ashfield in Torquay during her early years.
