Tolmomyias
''Tolmomyias'' is a genus of Neotropical birds in the tyrant flycatcher family Tyrannidae. It is one of the two genera containing the "flatbills"; the other is ''Rhynchocyclus''. The genus was erected by the Austrian ornithologist Carl Eduard Hellmayr in 1927 with the yellow-olive flatbill (''Tolmomyias sulphurescens'') as the type species. The genus name ''Tolmomyias'' combines the Ancient Greek ' "courage" or "boldness" with the Neo-Latin ' "flycatcher". These species are notoriously difficult to identify, except by voice. Their taxonomy is complex and it is likely that some "species" actually include several species level taxa. They are relatively thickset birds with proportionally large heads and, as suggested by their name, flat bills. All have a primarily yellow-green plumage Plumage ( "feather") is a layer of feathers that covers a bird and the pattern, colour, and arrangement of those feathers. The pattern and colours of plumage differ between species and subspecie ...

Orange-eyed Flatbill
The orange-eyed flatbill or orange-eyed flycatcher (''Tolmomyias traylori'') is a species of bird in the family Tyrannidae. It is found in the Amazon (specifically in várzea forest) in south-eastern Colombia, eastern Ecuador, and north-eastern Peru. First recognized as a species due to its distinct voice, it was only described in 1997; the binomial commemorates the American ornithologist Melvin Alvah Traylor Jr. The International Union for Conservation of Nature has rated the conservation status of this species as being of "least concern". Description The orange-eyed flatbill grows to a length of about . It has olive upper parts and a greyish crown. The facial area, throat and chest are greyish-buff and the belly yellowish. The iris is orange, and this and the buff throat is distinctive and helps distinguish this bird from other species in the genus. The song is a series of five to seven notes "zhreee", more extended and more rasping than the yellow-breasted flatbill (''Tolmo ...

Grey-crowned Flatbill
The grey-crowned flatbill or grey-crowned flycatcher (''Tolmomyias poliocephalus'') is a species of bird in the family Tyrannidae. It is found in humid forest in the Amazon and Atlantic Forest in South America. It closely resembles the yellow-margined and yellow-olive flatbills, but its lower mandible is dark with a pale base. It is a fairly common bird with a wide range and the International Union for Conservation of Nature has rated it as "least concern". Description ''Tolmomyias'' flatbills are robust small birds with broad beaks. The grey-crowned flatbill is about long and has a generally yellowish-green plumage, a grey cap and nape, and a yellowish throat marked with grey. The iris is usually a pale colour and the mandible has a dark tip. Several species of flatbill overlap in their range and are easily confused with each other visually, but their songs are mostly distinctive. The grey-crowned flatbill's song is a series of whistles rising in pitch with the final whistle t ...

Olive-faced Flatbill
The olive-faced flatbill or olive-faced flycatcher (''Tolmomyias viridiceps'') is a species of bird in the tyrant flycatcher family Tyrannidae. It is found in riparian woodland and at the forest edge in western Amazonia. The olive-faced flatbill was described by the English ornithologists Philip Sclater and Osbert Salvin in 1873 from a specimen collected in Pebas, Peru. They coined the binomial name ''Rhynchocyclus viridiceps''. It was formerly treated as a subspecies In biological classification, subspecies is a rank below species, used for populations that live in different areas and vary in size, shape, or other physical characteristics (morphology), but that can successfully interbreed. Not all species ... of the ochre-lored flatbill (''Tolmomyias flaviventris'') but is now considered as a separate species based primarily on its very different vocalization. Tyrannidae
The tyrant flycatchers (Tyrannidae) are a family of passerine birds which occur throughout North and South America. They are considered the largest family of birds known to exist in the world, with more than 400 species. They are the most diverse avian family in every country in the Americas, except for the United States and Canada. The members vary greatly in shape, patterns, size and colors. Some tyrant flycatchers may superficially resemble the Old World flycatchers, which they are named after but are not closely related to. They are members of suborder Tyranni (suboscines), which do not have the sophisticated vocal capabilities of most other songbirds.del Hoyo, J. Elliott, A. & Christie, D. (editors). (2004) ''Handbook of the Birds of the World. Volume 9: Cotingas to Pipits and Wagtails''. Lynx Edicions. A number of species previously included in this family are now placed in the family Tityridae (''see Systematics''). Sibley and Alquist in their 1990 bird taxonomy had th ...
