Theatre In Denmark
The theatre of Denmark continues to thrive thanks to the many theatres in Copenhagen and across the country which put on a wide variety of Danish and foreign performances. The flagship Royal Danish Theatre presents drama, opera, ballet and music. Since the 18th century, Danish playwrights have been successful in attracting wide public interest. History It was in the 18th century with the plays of Ludvig Holberg (1684–1754) that Danish theatre began to prosper. Holberg, sometimes known as the Danish Molière in view of his successful satirical comedies (1722), is considered to be the founder of the Danish theatre. Plays such as ''Jean de France'' and ''Jeppe of the Hill'' are still performed today. Adam Oehlenschläger (1779–1850) introduced romanticism to the Danish theatre. Especially successful was his ''Earl Hakon the Mighty'', premiered in 1808. Kjeld Abell
Kjeld Abell (25 August 1901 – 5 March 1961) was a Danish playwright, screenwriter, and theatrical designer. Born in Ribe, Denmark, Abell's first designs were seen in ballets directed by George Balanchine at Copenhagen's Royal Danish Theatre and London's Alhambra Theatre. Roughly the dramatic work of Abell might be divided into three phases: a) criticism of middle class conventions, b) fighting Nazism and c) criticism of post-war pessimism and urge for death. Perhaps he is the first consequent modernist among Danish playwrights with his use of a flash back Chinese box system and a growing use of symbols and parallel actions. Sebastian (Danish Musician)
Knud Torben Christensen (born 19 December 1949), better known by his stage name Sebastian, is a Danish singer, guitarist and composer. Starting as a musician in the late 1960s he is still active and very popular. So far his career has spanned four decades. Having worked in the folk genre, he has become one of the most prominent pop/rock musicians in Denmark and has scored numerous films and plays. Breaking The Waves
''Breaking the Waves'' is a 1996 psychological drama film directed and co-written by Danish filmmaker Lars von Trier and starring English stage actress Emily Watson as her feature film acting debut. Set in the Scottish Highlands in the early 1970s, it is about an unusual young woman and of the love she has for her husband, who asks her to have sex with other men when he becomes immobilised from a work accident. The film is an international co-production between Denmark and seven other European countries, while the former's involvement as his first film led by von Trier under his Danish company Zentropa. It is the first film in Trier's Golden Heart Trilogy, which also includes ''The Idiots'' (1998) and ''Dancer in the Dark'' (2000). Astrid Saalbach (born 29 November 1955) is a Denmark, Danish playwright and novelist. Biography She was born in Søborg and trained in acting at the Danish National Theatre School. She worked as an actor for seven years before turning to writing. In 1981, she wrote the radio play ''Spor i sandet'' (Footprints in the sand). That was followed by the radio play ''Bekræftelsen'' (The Confirmation) in 1982 and the television play ''En verden, der blegner'' (A World that Fades Away) in 1984. Kuusankoski
Kuusankoski is a neighbourhood of city of Kouvola, former industrial town and municipality of Finland, located in the region of Kymenlaakso in the province of Southern Finland. The population of Kuusankoski was 20,392 (2003) and the total area was 129.5 km² of which 114 km² was land and 14.56 km² water. It is located some northeast of the Finnish capital Helsinki. Leif Thormod Panduro (18 April 1923 – 16 January 1977) was a Danish writer, novelist, short story writer, and dramatist. Life A dentist by profession, he began in his thirties to write stories about people who can't conform to society's rules for one reason or another. ''Rend mig i traditionerne'', (Kick me in the traditions) from 1959 is about an adolescent who finally ends up in an asylum because he thinks society is mad. This novel was made into a film in 1979. ''Fern fra Danmark'' (Mr. Fern from Denmark) is about a man who wakes up in a hospital with amnesia but discovers more and more about a not very pleasant self. Panduro's books and plays grew increasingly pessimistic about the orderly middle-class society and its senseless norms. Panduro's books were and are still popular in Denmark. Grandmother's House
Grandfather's House, also known as the Paul Curtis House, is a historic house in Medford, Massachusetts. It is claimed to be the original house named in the American poem "Over the River and through the Wood" by Lydia Maria Child. (Although many people sing "to grandmother's house we go", the author's original words were "to grandfather's house we go".) The house, which was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975, is also noteworthy for being the best preserved example of Greek Revival architecture in Medford, and for its association with Paul Curtis, a prominent local shipbuilder. The rear portion of the modern house was built as a small farmhouse in the early 19th century. Child recalled the farmhouse when she wrote of her childhood visits to her grandfather's house in her poem, published in 1844. Carl Erik Soya
Carl Erik Soya, (30 October 1896 – 10 November 1983), also known by the single appellation Soya, was a Danish author and dramatist. His works were often satirical provocations against double standards and dishonesty. In 1975, Soya received Denmark's foremost literary award, Grand Prize of the Danish Academy. Early life Carl Erik Martin Soya-Jensen was born in Copenhagen, Denmark on 30 October 1896, the son of the painter and professor Carl Martin Soya-Jensen. His parents died when he was a young boy. The inheritance he received provided Soya with financial independence and enabled him to pursue a career as a writer. In 1915, Soya entered the Metropolitan School in Copenhagen, and received his diploma the following year.
