The title of Tharakan is an honorific hereditary title which was bestowed upon a few prominent Saint Thomas Christian families in the former Kingdoms of Travancore and Cochin, currently the State of Kerala in India. Etymology The word Tharakan literally means the holder of document of Raja. They are so called because they were the recipients of Tharaku or writ of social privilege. Tharakan (Hindu Caste)
Tharakan is a Hindu caste from the Palakkad district of Kerala, South India. The majority of the Tharakans are located in Valluvanad, with major agglomerations around vellinezhi,Vayillyamkunnu, Katambazhippuram,Kuttanassery, Sreekrishnapuram, Mangode, Thiruvazhiyodu, Chethallur and Mannarkkad. Many Sanskrit scholars and popular astrologers originated from this community. Thachil Matthoo Tharakan
Thachil Mar Matthoo Tharakan (1741–1814) was a Saint Thomas Christian merchant, social leader and minister who played a key role in Kerala, especially in its Travancore and Cochin regions, in India towards the latter part of the 18th century and early 19th century. He relentlessly worked to bring about a reunification in his community which was divided into Catholic ('' Pazhayakūr'') and Jacobite (''Puthenkūr'') after the Coonan Cross Oath of 1653. He organized his community against the colonialist attempts of Portuguese and played a prominent role in the assembly of Catholic Saint Thomas Christians at Angamāly that paved the way for the establishment of independent Syro-Malabar hierarchy. Trader and exporter Matthoo belonged to Alangad, near North Kuthiathode, in the present Paravur Taluk of Ernakulam District. Puthencavu Mathan Tharakan
Mahakavi Puthencavu Mathan Tharakan (born 1903) was a Malayalam poet. Birth and family He was born on 5 September 1903 at Puthencavu, a village in present day Alapuzha district of Kerala, South India, then in Travancore to Kizhakkethalakal Eapen Mathai and Mariamma. He had 2 sons. His son K. M. Tharakan was a chairman of the Kerala Sahitya Akademi, noted critic, writer and novelist. Surviving descendants of Puthencavu Mathan Tharakan, his great grand nephew C. John Mathai and family, currently reside in Alleppey. Education and career His early life was spent in Puthencavu. He was inspired by the work of his great-uncle George Mathan to pursue a career in literature together with academic work. P. K. Hormis Tharakan, an Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of the Kerala cadre (1968 batch), was chief of the Research and Analysis Wing (R&AW), India's external intelligence agency, from 1 February 2005 to 31 January 2007.
