Tanna (genus)
''Tanna'' is a genus of cicadas from Southeast Asia and East Asia. In 2010 Lee and Hill placed ''Tanna'' in the subtribe Leptopsaltriina, which is now in the tribe Leptopsaltriini together with a number of related genera that also possess abdominal tubercles, including ''Leptopsaltria'', '' Maua'', ''Nabalua'', ''Purana'', and others. William Lucas Distant
William Lucas Distant (12 November 1845 Rotherhithe – 4 February 1922 Wanstead) was an English entomologist. Biography Early years Distant was born in Rotherhithe, the son of whaling captain Alexander Distantspecies:B.R. Subba Rao, Rao, B.R. Subba (1998) ''History of Entomology in India''. Following his father's death in 1867, a trip to the Malay Peninsula to visit his older brother, also named Alexander and a ship's captain, aroused his interest in natural history, and resulted in the publication of ''Rhopalocera Malayana'' (1882–1886), a description of the butterflies of the Malay Peninsula. (He considered 5 August 1867 as the most eventful day in his life). ''Tanna japonensis'', also called the evening cicada or , is a species of cicada, a family of insects, and a member of the genus '' Tanna''. It is distributed throughout East Asia, and is most common in Japan. Its shrill call can be heard most often in the morning and evening. One of its possible kanji names (茅蜩) is derived from the character (茅) for a category of grasses that includes ''Miscanthus sinensis'', a type of reed that it inhabits. In Japan, it is also known as because of the noise that it makes. Characteristics The adult male has a body length of , the female is . The male's abdomen is longer and thicker than that of the female, making it easy to distinguish between them. In addition, the intra-abdominal cavity of the male is more developed, giving it a more resonant call.
