Taczanowski Family
Taczanowski (Polish feminine: Taczanowska; plural: Taczanowscy) is the surname of a Polish szlachta (nobility) family from Poznań bearing the Jastrzębiec coat of arms and the motto: ''Plus penser que dire''. They took their name from their estate Taczanów in the 15th century and by the 19th century were among the leading magnates in partitioned-Poland. Members of the family are historically significant religious, political, scientific, and military figures. The family was granted the title of count by King Friedrich Wilhelm IV of Prussia in 1857. The Austrian branch of the family, which spells the name Dassanowsky, came to Vienna with the forces of King Jan Sobieski during the Battle of Vienna in 1683. Hubert Taczanowski (born 1 October 1960, Poland) is a US and UK-based motion picture cinematographer. He is the son of Stanisław and Mirosława (née Sadżak) Taczanowski and a member of the former magnate family Taczanowski from Poznań A graduate of Cinematography at the famed Łódź Film School in Poland, Taczanowski has been the director of photography on nineteen feature films and two television series. His films have been screened at the Sundance, Venice, Toronto, Edinburgh and Berlin Film Festivals. Additionally, he has shot over twenty music videos for Sony Music, Atlantic Records, EMI and Chrysalis. In January 2007 he married British costume designer Stephanie Collie. He resides in New York and London. Edmund Taczanowski (1822, Wieczyn – 1879, Choryń) was a Polish general, insurrectionist, member of the Taczanowski magnate dynasty (he was grandson of the famous privateer Maksymilian Taczanowski), and Lord of the estate of Choryń in the province of Poznań. Early years and military career The son of Jozef Grzegorz Mikolaj Piotr Taczanowski and Franciszka Drweska, as a youth Taczanowski was influenced by Polish poet and national hero Adam Mickiewicz, who lived at Choryń in 1831 while Prussian authorities prevented him from returning to Russian-Poland to support the insurrection there. Originally a Prussian officer, Taczanowski resigned to participate in the Greater Poland Uprising 1846 and in the 1848 revolt against Austrian-Polish rule. Władysław Taczanowski (; 17 March 1819, in Jabłonna, Lublin Voivodeship – 17 January 1890, in Warsaw) was a Polish zoologist and collector of natural history who explored the Russian Far East and northern Africa. He specialized mainly in ornithology but also described numerous other taxa including reptiles and arachnids.
