Swimming At The 2020 Summer Paralympics
Swimming at the 2020 Summer Paralympics was held at the Tokyo Aquatics Centre. There were 146 events (76 male, 67 female, 3 mixed relay events) - six fewer events than the 2016 Summer Paralympics. Swimming is the second largest sport: behind athletics and ahead of table tennis. The 2020 Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games were postponed to 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. They kept the 2020 name and were held from 24 August to 5 September 2021. Qualification Qualification starts from 1 October 2018 and finishes on 1 August 2021. Classes There are three swimming sport class prefixes for swimming strokes: * S is for freestyle, butterfly and backstroke events. * SB is for breaststroke * SM is for individual medley events. Tokyo Aquatics Centre
The is an indoor swimming pool in the Mori- Beach Park () in Tatsumi in the Kōtō ward in eastern Tokyo. Construction began in April 2017 and was completed in 2020. The total construction cost was 56.7 billion yen, ¥ (471 million Euro, €). The opening, scheduled for 22 March 2020, was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic and took place on 23 July 2020 without an audience. The swimming hall was built for the 2020 Summer Olympics and can accommodate up to 12,000 spectators. The arena will also be used for swimming competitions at the 2020 Summer Paralympics. The swimming arena has two swimming pools and a pool for water diving. The roof was built on the ground and raised step by step to a height of 37 metres. It is 160 metres long, 130 metres wide and 10 metres thick. The roof weighs 7,000 tonnes. Paraplegia
Paraplegia, or paraparesis, is an impairment in motor or sensory function of the lower extremities. The word comes from Ionic Greek () "half-stricken". It is usually caused by spinal cord injury or a congenital condition that affects the neural (brain) elements of the spinal canal. The area of the spinal canal that is affected in paraplegia is either the thoracic, lumbar, or sacral regions. If four limbs are affected by paralysis, tetraplegia or quadriplegia is the correct term. If only one limb is affected, the correct term is monoplegia. Freestyle (swimming)
Freestyle is a category of swimming competition, defined by the rules of the International Swimming Federation (FINA), in which competitors are subject to a few limited restrictions on their swimming stroke. Final (competition)
The final of a competition is the match or round in which the winner of the entire event is decided. In sports competitions following a knockout system, where only two individuals or teams compete in each match, the final is usually played between the winners of two semi-finals. However, if more than two entrants are required for each match, then qualification for the final may be through some other process such as winning ''heats''.
