Swimming At The 1991 Pan American Games
Swimming at the 11th Pan American Games was held August 12–18, 1991 in Havana, Cuba. The competition consisted of 32 events (26 individual and 6 relay); and were contested in the long course (50m) pool. Brazil's victory in the men's 4x100m freestyle relay was only the second time that the U.S. lost the gold in a relay event, at the Pan American Games. The first had been to Canada in women's 4x100m medley at the 1971 Pan American Games. It was the first time that the U.S. lost the gold medal in the men's 100 meter freestyle, after 10 straight titles. The swimming competition at the 1987 Pan American Games took place from August to August 15 at the Indiana University Natatorium in Indianapolis, Indiana, USA. Sean Killion
Sean Thomas Killion (born October 24, 1967) is an American former competition swimmer and Pan American Games gold medalist, who represented the United States at the 1992 Summer Olympics. Killion was born in Camden, New Jersey, and spent his early years training at Jersey Wahoos, a club located in Mount Laurel, New Jersey. Growing up in Cherry Hill, New Jersey, Killion swam at Cherry Hill High School East, setting New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association records that have stood for as long as 30 years before he graduated in 1986. He was a surprise gold medalist in the 1986 Goodwill Games, defeating world record and Olympic gold medalist Vladimir Salnikov, outtouching him at the wall. Nelson Diebel
Nelson W. Diebel (born November 9, 1970) is an American former competition swimmer, Olympic champion, and former world record-holder. Diebel won two gold medals at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, Spain. First, he won the men's 100-meter breaststroke, setting a new Olympic record of 1:01.50 in the event final. Afterward, he swam the breaststroke leg for the winning U.S. team in the men's 4×100-meter medley relay, together with fellow Americans Jeff Rouse (backstroke), Pablo Morales (butterfly) and Jon Olsen (freestyle). Todd Torres (born June 11, 1968) is a former international breaststroke and freestyle swimmer from Puerto Rico, who participated in two consecutive Summer Olympics starting in 1992. His best Olympic result was a 12th place in the Men's Freestyle Relay at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, Spain. Torres also competed for the United States, winning a gold and a silver medal at the 1987 Summer Universiade in Zagreb. Torres swam collegiately for Louisiana State University (LSU). Daniel Hayward Veatch (born April 18, 1965) is an American former competition swimmer who represented the United States at the 1988 Olympics in Seoul, South Korea. Veatch competed in his signature event, the men's 200-meter backstroke, finishing seventh in the event final. He won the 200-meter backstroke at the Pan Pacific Games in Brisbane in 1987 and again in Tokyo in 1989. He pulled his hamstring just before the U.S. Trials for the 1992 Summer Olympics and so missed those Games. He is openly gay, and lives in San Francisco.
