Superstar
A superstar is someone who has great popular appeal and is widely known, prominent, or successful in their field. Celebrities referred to as "superstars" may include individuals who work as actors, musicians, athletes, and other media-based professions. History The origin of the term in the context of celebrity is uncertain, but a similar expression is attested in John Nyren's 1832 cricket book '' The Cricketers of My Time''. Nyren described the 18th-century cricketer John Small as "a star of the first magnitude".John Nyren, ''The Cricketers of my Time'', Robson, 1998, p.57. The earliest use of the term "superstar" has been credited to Frank Patrick in reference to the ice hockey players on his Vancouver Millionaires teams of the 1910s and 1920s, specifically Cyclone Taylor. In the June 1977 edition of ''Interview'' magazine, pop artist Andy Warhol was asked by editor Glenn O'Brien who invented the word "superstar". Warhol, known for popularizing the term, responded, "I think ...

Superstars (American TV Program)
''The Superstars'' was a televised sporting event featuring ten top athletes from ten different sports competing in events that were not their own. The idea was developed by Dick Button who shopped the idea to all three U.S. television networks. The show was sold to ABC which aired it as a two-hour ABC Sports special in the winter of 1973. By the end of 1973, a similar event appeared in Great Britain and within a few years, separate competitions were being held in nearly a dozen countries including Australia, Canada, Ireland, Netherlands, New Zealand and Sweden. The U.S. version grew to encompass women, entire sporting teams and celebrities and lasted off and on for three decades, from 1973 until 2003. It was briefly revived in 2009. Overview Bob Seagren, an Olympic pole vault gold medalist, was the first winner. However, it was heavyweight champion boxer Joe Frazier who nearly stole the show. In the very first event, the 50 meter swimming heats, Frazier nearly drowned, and only ...

Superstars (British TV Programme)
''Superstars'' is a sports competition in which elite athletes from a variety of sports compete against each other. The athletes must not compete in the sport for which they practice as their profession; resembling a decathlon. Points are awarded for the position in which the competitor places in each event. The competitor with the most points at the end of all ten events is declared the champion. On the original ABC version, an athlete was able to compete in a maximum of seven events, but no athlete was permitted to compete in the sport(s) of his or her profession. In the World, International, European and British versions of the contest, athletes would compete in 8 out of 10 events, with no one allowed to take part in their own sport, although some handicapping rules did apply. The idea was developed by 1948 and 1952 Olympic figure skating champion Dick Button. He shopped the idea to all three U.S. television networks, and ABC bought it as a special for the winter of 1973. Superstar USA
''The WB's Superstar USA'' is a television show that spoofed the popular show ''American Idol'' and which aired on The WB in 2004. Essentially its polar opposite, ''Superstar USA'' told contestants they were looking for the best singer when they were actually looking for the worst. Description Hosted by Brian McFayden, people first audition before three judges (Christopher Briggs, who also produced the show; rapper Tone Loc and singer Vitamin C) in four cities across the United States. Finalists were chosen based on the lie that they were the most likely to be able to parlay their win into a successful recording contract based on talent. However, the audition process was the opposite of ''American Idol'' as good singers were mocked and rejected while bad singers were given gushing praise and passed to the next round. Eventually the contest was "won" by Jamie Foss, who could barely carry a tune. Throughout the competition she was constantly mocked by judges with thinly veiled ref ...
