Submarine
A submarine (often shortened to sub) is a watercraft capable of independent operation underwater. (It differs from a submersible, which has more limited underwater capability.) The term "submarine" is also sometimes used historically or informally to refer to remotely operated vehicles and Autonomous underwater vehicle, robots, or to medium-sized or smaller vessels (such as the midget submarine and the wet sub). Submarines are referred to as ''boats'' rather than ''ships'' regardless of their size. Although experimental submarines had been built earlier, submarine design took off during the 19th century, and submarines were adopted by several navies. They were first used widely during World War I (1914–1918), and are now used in many navy, navies, large and small. Their military uses include: attacking enemy surface ships (merchant and military) or other submarines; aircraft carrier protection; Blockade runner, blockade running; Ballistic missile submarine, nuclear deterrenc ...

Soviet Submarine K-43
''K-43'' was a nuclear-powered cruise missile submarine operated by the Soviet and Indian navies. It was built between 1964 and 1967 and was commissioned into the Soviet navy on 5 November 1967.Podvodnye Lodki, Yu.V. Apalkov, Sankt Peterburg, 2002, It later served as INS ''Chakra'' in the Indian Navy from 1988 to 1991. It was leased to India on 1 September 1987 and reached its base in Visakhapatnam on 3 February 1988 after a long journey. The Soviets said that the submarine was transferred for helping train the Indian Navy in operating nuclear submarines. During its service with India, it was partially manned by a Soviet crew, who reportedly did not allow Indians into the missile room and into the reactor compartment and this is believed to be a reason for the termination of the contract after 3 years. The lease of ''Chakra'' reportedly helped India gain first-hand experience in handling a nuclear submarine that helped them build the of nuclear submarines. Description '' ...

Charlie-class Submarine
The Project 670 ''Skat'' submarine (NATO classification Charlie class) was a nuclear-powered cruise missile submarine built for the Soviet Navy and later operated by the Russian Navy. All Charlie I/II-class submarines are decommissioned. One Charlie-class submarine was used for testing an Oniks missile. Charlie I and its successor Charlie II-class submarines are designed by the Lazurit Central Design Bureau of Gorky. Background The Charlie I-class submarine (Project 670 ''Skat'') SSGN was first launched at the Krasnoye Sormovo inland shipyard at Gorkiy in 1967 with another ten following over a period of five years. The Charlie Is had two banks of four missile tubes angled upwards on each side of the bow outside the pressure hull. The tubes were covered by large outer doors and the design was to incorporate the P-120 Malakhit (SS-N-9 Siren) medium-range anti-ship missile. Due to delays in the missile development, the missile was substituted with the shorter range P-70 Ame ...

Kalvari-class Submarine (2015)
The ''Kalvari''-class submarines (), formally classified as the Project-75 submarines (P-75), is a class of diesel-electric attack submarines operated by the Indian Navy (IN). Built by a syndicate of French and Indian shipyards, namely, Naval Group and Mazagon Dock Limited (MDL) respectively, the class is an export derivative of the French-origin , originally designed by Naval Group. A namesake of the former s that the IN operated between 1967 and 2010, the class was originally planned in the late-1990s as an initial phase of a 30-year long naval rearmament roadmap to replace the IN's conventional submarine fleet, namely the and submarines. India's Ministry of Defence (MoD) placed an order of six submarines in 2005, at a cost of . The last of the first batch of submarines entered service on 15 January 2025. A repeat order for another batch of 3 submarines is to be placed in February 2025 at a cost of . First introduced to operational service in 2017, the submarines are curr ...

S-80 Plus-class Submarine
The S-80 Plus class (or ''Isaac Peral'' class) is a Spanish class of four submarines being built by the state-owned Spanish company Navantia at its Cartagena shipyard for the Spanish Navy. In common with other contemporary submarines, they feature air-independent propulsion. The class has its roots in the late 1990s, and Spain ordered the submarines into production in 2003. Due to problems with the design, it had to be extensively redesigned in the 2010s, and a Spanish government budget crisis forced additional delays. On November 30, 2023, the first submarine of the class entered service with the Spanish Navy. They are oceanic submarines of medium tonnage with the capacity to carry out long duration missions in scenarios far from their base, and to do so stealthily. They will have an integrated platform control system that allows operation with a reduced crew complement and a high degree of automation with remote control. The characteristics of this class of ships place them ...

Type 214 Submarine
The Type 214 is a class of diesel–electric powertrain, diesel–electric submarines developed exclusively for export by Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft, Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft GmbH (HDW). It features diesel propulsion with an air-independent propulsion (AIP) system using Siemens AG, Siemens polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) hydrogen fuel cells. The class combines the design principles of the Type 209 submarine family and the features of the Type 212A submarine. However, as an export design, it lacks some of the classified technologies of the Type 212 such as the non-magnetic steel hull that makes it difficult to detect using a magnetic anomaly detector. Due to improvements in the pressure hull materials, the Type 214 can dive nearly . It can also carry food, fresh water and fuel for 84 days of operation. A contract to build four submarines for the Hellenic Navy was signed 15 February 2000 and a fourth unit was ordered in June 2002. The first submarine was built at HDW in K ...

Cruise Missile Submarine
A cruise missile submarine is a submarine that carries and launches cruise missiles (Submarine-launched cruise missile, SLCMs consisting of land-attack cruise missiles and anti-ship missiles) as its primary armament. Missiles greatly enhance a warship's ability to attack surface combatants and strike land targets; although torpedoes are a more discreet option for submerged submarines, missiles give a much longer Standoff missile, stand-off range, shorter time to impact the target, as well as the ability to engage multiple targets on different headings at the same time. Many cruise missile submarines retain the capability to deploy Nuclear weapons delivery, nuclear warheads on their missiles, but they are considered distinct from ballistic missile submarines due to the substantial differences between the two weapons systems' flight characteristics; cruise missiles fly aerodynamically using flight surfaces like wings or fins, while a ballistic missile uses its engine power alone as ...

Project 75I-class Submarine
Project-75 (India), simply referred to as the P-75(I) program, is a military acquisition initiative affiliated to India's Ministry of Defence (MoD), aimed at the planned procurement of diesel-electric submarines for the Indian Navy (IN). Originally conceived in 1997, the initiative's objective has been to procure a class of six conventionally-powered attack submarines for the Indian Navy Submarine Arm, as a replacement for the force's ''Sindhughosh''-class submarines. The program has experienced multiple delays owing to hurdles emanating from bureaucratic red tape, inadequate planning and a lack of corporate competitiveness, causing longstanding delays to the program's timeline, which has consequently led to intense criticism. Originally planned to enter operational service in the late-2020s, the six submarines are now expected to be delivered by the mid-2030s. As of 2025, initial negotiations for the purchase-cum-manufacturing of six submarines designed by ThyssenKrupp Marin ...
