Sterculioideae
Sterculioideae is a subfamily of the family Malvaceae containing evergreen and deciduous trees and shrubs. A 2006 molecular study indicated the Sterculioideae was most likely to be a monophyletic group, and that it had four major clades within it. However, the relationships between the clades were not resolved. The clades consist of a: *''Cola'' clade, with the genera ''Cola'' and ''Octolobus'' of Africa and ''Pterygota'' of Africa, South America and southeast Asia forming a subclade, '' Hildegardia'' and ''Firmiana'' forming a second and ''Scaphium'' and ''Pterocymbium'' a third. *''Heritiera'' clade comprising the genus ''Heritiera'' *''Sterculia'' clade comprising the large genus ''Sterculia'' of Africa and Asia. *''Brachychiton'' clade of Australasian and New Caledonian species, including '' Brachychiton'', ''Acropogon'', ''Argyrodendron'' and ''Franciscodendron ''Franciscodendron'' is a monotypic genus in the subfamily Sterculioideae (previously the family Sterculiac ...

Malvaceae
Malvaceae, or the mallows, is a family of flowering plants estimated to contain 244 genera with 4225 known species. Well-known members of economic importance include okra, cotton, cacao and durian. There are also some genera containing familiar ornamentals, such as ''Alcea'' (hollyhock), ''Malva'' (mallow), and ''Tilia'' (lime or linden tree). The largest genera in terms of number of species include ''Hibiscus'' (300 species), ''Sterculia'' (250 species), ''Dombeya'' (250 species), '' Pavonia'' (200 species) and '' Sida'' (200 species). Taxonomy and nomenclature The circumscription of the Malvaceae is controversial. The traditional Malvaceae '' sensu stricto'' comprise a very homogeneous and cladistically monophyletic group. Another major circumscription, Malvaceae ''sensu lato'', has been more recently defined on the basis that genetics studies have shown the commonly recognised families Bombacaceae, Tiliaceae, and Sterculiaceae, which have always been considered closely allie ...

Florissantia (plant)
''Florissantia'' is an extinct genus of flowering plants in the Malvaceae subfamily Sterculioideae known from western North America and far eastern Asia. Flower, fruit, and pollen compression fossils have been found in formations ranging between the Early Eocene through to the Early Oligocene periods. The type species is ''Florissantia speirii'' and three additional species are known, ''Florissantia ashwillii'', ''Florissantia quilchenensis'', and ''Florissantia sikhote-alinensis''. Distribution Fossils of ''Florissantia'' have been found in Early Eocene to Middle Oligocene localities, including fossil beds in Alaska, British Columbia, Colorado, Montana, Oregon, Utah, Washington, Wyoming and the Russian far east. The type species ''F. speirii'' is known from a number of formations in the west, with the type locality being the Florissant Formation of Colorado. The formation is composed of successive lake deposits resulting from a volcanic debris flow damming a valley. When ...

Cola (plant)
''Cola'' is a genus of trees native to the tropical forests of Africa, classified in the family Malvaceae, subfamily Sterculioideae (previously in the separate family Sterculiaceae). Species in this genus are sometimes referred to as kola tree or kola nut for the caffeine-containing fruit produced by the trees that is often used as a flavoring ingredient in beverages. The genus was thought to be closely related to the South American genus ''Theobroma'', or cocoa, but the latter is now placed in a different subfamily. They are evergreen trees, growing up to 20 m tall (about 60 feet), with glossy ovoid leaves up to 30 cm long and star-shaped fruit. Origin and distribution ''Cola'' is a genus of the Family Malvaceae with approximately 100 to 125 species occurring in the evergreen lowland and montane forest of continental (primarily tropical) Africa. The earliest known evidence of ''Cola'' is ''Cola amharaensis'', a well-preserved fossil leaf compression from the late Oligocen ...

Argyrodendron
''Argyrodendron'' is a genus of mainly trees in the family Malvaceae. They occur in Malesia, New Guinea and Australia. In Australia, they are a well-known rainforest species known by their Indigenous Australian name, booyong or the tulip oak. ''Argyrodendron'' has often been treated as a synonym of ''Heritiera'', but a recent molecular study shows it to be distinct therefrom.Wilkie et al. ''Phylogenetic Relationships within the Subfamily Sterculioideae (Malvaceae/Sterculiaceae-Sterculieae) Using the Chloroplast Gene ndhF.'' Syst. Bot. 31(1): 160-170 (2006). In their native habitat, they can grow tall, 40–60 metres, but rarely reach this in cultivation. The bases of large trees are usually prominently buttressed. Leaves with white or silver on underside. ''Argyrodendron actinophyllum'' and '' Argyrodendron trifoliolatum'' occur in scrubs and rainforests along the east coast of Australia, but '' Argyrodendron peralatum'' has a restricted distribution in north Queensland betwee ...
